Google Street View
« on: February 09, 2016, 02:10:48 PM »
I couldn't figure out exactly where this needs to be posted...

Anyway, when did google street view start including some of our beloved trails?
https://goo.gl/maps/RformijgWW12

I'm not sure how I feel about it: one thing is that it might take away some of the pleasant surprises of the many wonderful sight and views (I know, photos have no chance of capturing the glory of Big Bend),
and the other thing is - why didn't I get to be the one to document the trails.  It's so hard to set aside enough time to see the parts of the park I already know about.  But to go and get compensated too sounds like a pretty good gig.

I knew they were starting to street view some of the big name trails line bright Angel and some ski slopes, but I didn't realize they had gotten to big bend. I like it, anything to give me a small fix. I've certainly snuck quite a few peeks at virtual big bend while at work.

And the more images we get from big bend the more it spurs our curiosity. I planned my route up Goat Mountain off the street view from Ross Maxwell. Without that, I may not have bothered to drive out of my way to go check it out.

Well, thanks for that little plug and I'm glad it has served you well.   When I started that back 2003, I had every intention of doing what Google is doing today. Unfortunately, the technology, economic, and time resources available to me are somewhat limited in comparison.  They beat me to it.

"Well, I actually only saw it on Google.........."

But I don't see Google ever adding places like the top of casa Grande. In terms of escaping the drudgery of office life, I prefer hopping from scenic vista to scenic vista rather than clicking along a trail.

I've made a few video's of the roads I drove down last year.
I'm heading out to visit again in about 3 weeks. Most of my trails will be in the state park, but I do plan on driving Old Ore Rd and hoping to capture most, if not all on the go-pro.

And what's up with the Google car not driving the lower loop of the campground?

I just explored Closed Canyon via street view!  Now I'm wondering just how many street view locations I can find in the area...
