Had it to do over again -- which means, next time I do it to myself -- we would've spent the night at Talley and hiked the next day. Instead, we got to the park late in the afternoon and camped at Buenos Aires. We vastly underestimated how long it would take us to get to Talley, as the River Road was in less-than-optimal conditions (and we actually LOST the road in a drainage and ended up driving almost a mile off-course). So, we didn't start the trail until about 3 p.m., about 6 hours later than we should have. Even though it was wintertime, it still gets quite hot on that trail (as evidenced by my buddy's short sleeves in the photo). Our late start also cut down on our ability to explore the rim, and we didn't make it over to see Cross Canyon, which was a goal of ours.

David, you thinking about doing some camping at Talley in Oct/Nov? I'm game for it.

Heck yes!  I've been trying to get out there for years, but the time of year required to do it has restricted me.  I'd also like to do Elephant Tusk at the same time, if possible.

Nice, Windchime.

Question:  Has anyone ever tried to to set up a helicopter service for tourists?

I hope that doesn't happen, honestly.  I would hate to break up the peace with that noise.  Having said that though, I have to admit that a tour of the park by helicopter would be pretty cool and tempting.  Ahh...the dreaded double standard.

I could tolerate glider tours, but anything motorized would be too much noise.

What we need is some paragliding from the South Rim.  Then you could glide over to Elephant Tusk.

 I've always imagined myself sliding down a wire from the south rim to ET.....not possible, but what an experience that would be!
