Santa Elena Canyon 1899
« on: February 01, 2019, 03:51:09 PM »
It's been too long since Traces of Texas has posted here. Fortunately he's still active on Facebook.

The mouth of Santa Elena Canyon in what is now Big Bend National Park as seen 120 years ago, in 1899. This was taken by a USGS survey team and the photos associated with this trip are the first time the world at large was able to see what Big Bend actually looked like. It hasn't changed much in 116 years, I can tell you that!

What a nice addition to our thoughts of the Bend
Leave "quit" at the car.  Embrace the trail as your friend.  Expect to enjoy yourself, and to be amazed.

That picture reminded me of Ansel Adams' photo of Santa Elena, circa 1947.
A search for his picture landed me here:  https://thechouters.blogspot.com/2018/03/big-bend-national-park.html
Three photographs, taken across a span of nearly 120 years.
The landscape endures, we are the temporary travelers across it.
