Title: Elk in the Park
Post by: Casa Grande on June 12, 2018, 08:54:23 AM
Saw two giant,  beautiful elks at about the 10 mile mark on 385 in the park yesterday.  Never seen that before!

Given the number up between Ft Stockton and Marathon, this was inevitable.

It seems they are thriving.

Cool photos!

I believe Maravillas Ranch and Chalk Draw Ranch both have elk hunting

I'm guessing you were south of the Rosillios Ranch Road?

Thank you for sharing.  :great:  One of the rangers told me about elk just south persimmon gap several years ago but I have never seen one. How far away were they? Did you photograph them through a spotting scope?

Are elk as hardy as the "illegal alien" sheep that have come to be so prevalent?

Are aoudad sheep a proper paradigm for anticipating increasing elk populations in the Bend?

It was 10 miles north of Panther Junction. Yes,  just south of the Rosillos Ranch road.  They were probably 40 or 50 yards from the road.   They were huge!

Reading the article, my assumptions have been shattered.  So elk can naturally tolerate lower-elevation Texas heat.

And you question the 45 mph speed limit in the park !
I guess you have never seen what happens to the human body when you hit something that big at 70 mph. It ain't pretty boys. Plus it has a very ill effect on the innocent animal.

Likely because you knew something they didn't and that damaged their egos.

Might have something to do with the fact that the Government MUST control all public ___________. Infrastructure, industry, information, Take your pick.

But elk in the park is awesome!  :icon_biggrin:
