re graininess:  are you using digital camera?  or scanning film images?  what kind opf software are you using?  basically need more info.

Make sure your scanner's glass is clean, then crank up the DPI setting to 300 or so.  The image resizers usually don't add much graininess in my experience.  I typically save at the highest resolution possible when working with images, then after I'm through cropping and adjusting the brightness, etc. I feed it back through the image resizer.  It doesn't seem to matter much how big the original as far as the final size of the output from the resizer, but the quality of the original scanned image makes a huge difference.

Very nice! I have photos of the pink ones, but not of the Big Bend variety.
