There was a trail maintenance crew clipping nasty sharp pointy stuff on trails when we were out there last November.  They were mostly trimming stuff along the trail where it might poke some poor tourist.  They also did a lot of erosion control.

Heaven forbid a tourist get poked by a cactus in the desert.

I can just see someone complaining about getting stuck by a cactus to a ranger.  These would be the same people who wonder when they let the animals out.

Struck me as odd, too.  They were working on the Cattail Falls trail when we caught up with them.  They had done the Apache Canyon Trail up to the corral a few days before.  The erosion control was pretty necessary.  The trimming of yuccas, etc. seemed aimed at keeping the trail from being overgrown, I guess.  The trail workers were a group of 6 college kids.  Don't recall that they were messing with any of the cacti or other plants that don't grow very fast.
