Wildflowers March 12-16, 2007
« on: March 20, 2007, 12:42:25 PM »
I'm slowly making progress in sorting through all my photos from last week. I've put together a collection of all the wildflower shots. I'm sorry, I do not know all the names. Also, I'm sorry for the high number of images :D Hope you enjoy (hope you can actually get out to the park!).

Clump of bluebonnets near Croton Springs:

Flowering tree near Cattail Falls:

Yucca (you can find these just about everywhere in the park):

Paintbrush & Sotol (on trail to Cattail Falls):

Cactus with red blooms:

Hummingbird Moth & Flowers:

Early bloomer near Dominguez Springs trailhead:

Field of green off River Road (near Talley turn-off):

Desert Marigolds (?) off River Road just east of Black Gap Road:

Flowers on the east end of River Road (somewhere between Solis & Tornillo Creek bridge):

Flowers on the east end of River Road (somewhere between Solis & Tornillo Creek bridge):

And finally, the bluebonnets near the Tornillo Creek bridge, just north of the hot springs:

Four of these photos were taken by my wife. She's getting quite handy with the camera these days :D

Great pics!  That Hummingbird Moth looks 3-D, like it just flew into the picture.

Agreed.  The flower looks like Leucophilum (Cenisa) but the height seems low...unless they are just smaller shrubs.

Thanks everyone! That moth was difficult to shoot - he was buzzing around quickly and paused just for a second for each drink. I took over 30 photos to get just that one, clear shot.

Thanks. Yep, that'd be the one. Did you get any shots of the moth?

The only other one we saw was at Dominguez Springs, and it was getting late and too dark to shoot.

Oh, and thanks again for the photo. I think it makes a cool avatar :D

cool, I was wondering how they turned out. No I did not get any as I had the 10-22mm lens on the camera and was to lazy to put on the 50-500.

your welcome for the photo

TJ,

Thanks for the great photos.  The moth photo is amazing.

Is that moth unique to Big Bend?

Now you got my interest up and I had to Google it :D

The hummingbird moth appears to be a white-lined sphinx. This site states, "there are approximately 125 different species of sphinx moths in the United States and Canada." Here's another site.

I really like the pick of the flowering tree near Cattail Falls.  I might have to go there in the next day or two and hope it (or one like it) is still blooming.

Anyone have any idea what type of tree/shrub that is?

Of course, the moth and all the other photos are also awesome!
Don't worry about getting lost.  You're biodegradable

Thanks everyone! I appreciate your comments.

Given the fondness for the flying flower sucker, here's one more shot:

I got really lucky with that one. He was in flight and just about impossible to track through the viewfinder of the camera and even more difficult to focus correctly (the autofocus was getting quite a workout as I panned around like a madman) :D

Thanks! The flowering tree was my wife's photo. I'll let her know you liked it.

If you go, walk up to the pool of water below the falls and look right and up. The tree is hiding behind some large boulders.
