Which cell provider has worked well for you in BiBe?
« on: September 03, 2019, 04:33:56 PM »
Hi All,
Looking for recommendations about which cell phone provider has the best coverage in BiBe? The 'coverage maps' don't seem to help. Any thoughts on which company has good coverage around PJ or which company has not worked well for you at BiBe???

I know there is a tower in the basin now. I also know cell coverage is limited in the park as I've spent much time in the park in the past. But I'm thinking about changing to a less expensive cell plan with a different provider but... I don't want to lose coverage around PJ.

My experience,
AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint all work in various spots in the park. there is not complete coverage in the park, but it has worked in areas I never though of.

Fossil Bone exhibit area
Parking lot where Basin Road and Main park road meat
Panther Junction
Road to Rio Grand Village between mile marker 4 and 8
In the basin is a cell tower now, i believe it is AT&T's

Now for the odd spots
Santa Elena Canyon down at the rivers edge
Emory Peak
The hill to the north of the parking area for the Lost mine trail
Some spots along Old Maverick road

It has improved some over the last few years. Also you can get on the parks WiFi at Panther Junction, the Basin and Rio Grande Village
everything is better with bacon!!!

I've used T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T in that order over the years so perhaps not a fair comparison with today.  But I have had the best coverage with AT&T although data is roaming and limited in the number of MB they allow before they cut me off.

VERIZON - some high spots along the Dodson, especially the high saddle just west of Smoky Creek.
Leave "quit" at the car.  Embrace the trail as your friend.  Expect to enjoy yourself, and to be amazed.

ATT.  I haven't been to BiBe since they installed the new tower in the Basin, so all my calls were made from the bear sign pullout as you head up to the Basin.  My son had some coverage up on the Rim (and the top of Casa Grande :icon_biggrin:)

We have AT&T. My wife was surprised when her phone rang at Ernst Tinaja. I've been able to post pictures on social media from the South Rim, but data limits kick in very quickly. It's a data roaming area for AT&T (can't speak to other carriers, but probably so for them, too), so I'd turn off cell phone data unless you really need it (Remember: your phone and apps send and receive data even when you're not actively using data.). Texts and phone calls don't use data.

Verizon is my carrier and since I've been frequenting the area (last 4 years I guess) it's improved.  Last trip I had reception in quite a few areas.  Although I wouldn't say it's 100% I could call from the Basin campground, numerous areas on the South Rim, high points along Ross Maxwell, etc.

Funny, cause even though I had some reception there, when I go to the Frio (Concan) my phone goes completely dark.

I have ATT and cell service was fine in the Basin and on the South Rim. Didnít really pay attention anywhere else.

For the record, my employer has been told there is no cell service anywhere in Big Bend and that will continue to be the case!

Here here!

Part of the appeal of BIBE back in the day was nearly no radio signals at all.

Yup, it was wonderful to be able to say that it will be at least four or five days before I can get to a payphone at RGV or PJ.  One can still have that experience on the east side of the Chisos . . .

Thanks, again. I do love "being remote" when I'm visiting BiBe! I really don't expect coverage or even like having cell service on the trails where people should be looking at, listenting to, and enjoying nature and off their phones. (helpful in event of an emergency, though.)

However, if I'm going to be there for an extended stay (several months), I would like to find the provider with the best coverage. The "coverage maps" from the main providers all show very sparce coverage in the Big Bend but we all know we do get some reception.

Looks like Verizon map has more coverage than others but not sure how accurate those maps really are!  Anybody with Verizon able to comment about their experience with reception in the PJ area?

I've had some coverage with AT&T at PJ and certainly in the Basin with the tower put in last year. Just wondering if any of you use other providers that give you good reception when you're at PJ Visitor Center???
Thanks!

Verizon user and yes, I forgot to mention, but I did turn the phone on and call from PJ.

Actually, made it a point to check in back home on the days we swung back by there.
