Big Bend withiut a car
« on: January 03, 2019, 12:53:18 AM »
I will be flying into El Paso in early February and hope there is an alternative to having a rental car sitting unused while I make use of my 28 days in the parks.  Amtrak nor other public transportation do not seem to be the answer, or am I wrong?
This will be a time of spiritual, mental and physical renewal.  I fear wheels will make it too easy it to run for Dr. Pepper, pizza and smokes.

Big Bend National Park is a very large place.  I couldn't imagine being there for a month without a vehicle to get around.  How do you plan to get from El Paso to the park without a car?  Check this out:

If you can afford to have a car, I would do that.

The closest public transportation is the Amtrak stop in Alpine. Then you have another 80 miles to Terlingua and additional distances to the National and State parks. A bike might get you around the Ghosttown in Terlingua, but the distances really are long to get to places in the park, and there are classified, difficult hills along the way. It's possible to hitchhike between major destinations, but I wouldn't want to rely on hitching to move between less visited spots.

[Edit: i suppose your transpo decision also depends on how much time you plan to spend in the backcountry, though that's limited by park rules.]
