Car Rental or Ride options from Lajitas
« on: January 08, 2018, 10:31:29 PM »
Hi,
First time poster and glad to find the sight!
I am fortunate enough to have a small plane, and this will be my 2nd trip down from DFW area to hike for a long weekend. I was able to rent a jeep at the Lajitas resort for a decent price last February, but now they want $249/day!
Are there any other options out there? I'd rather pay someone to drive us each way. We just need a ride from Lajitas airstrip to the Basin and then return 3 days later.

Thanks!
Bill

Hey, Bill....you might try Desert Sports in Terlingua. I used them last year for a shuttle from Lajitas all the way to the Persimmon Gap park entrance. Two shuttles between Lajitas and the Basin should cost you far less than renting a Jeep thatíll just sit at the trailhead for several days.

I saw a flyer for Lyft in Terlingua.  When I checked my phone, there were no drivers available...

We decided to fly into Alpine and make the drive in from there: $39.99/d.
Bit easier on the pocketbook.

Is the rental at the airport or in town?

I rented from them once; good experience.  I bet they will gladly pick you up at the airport and let you drop it off back there too.

I too am looking for a ride. Last year I planned to canoe from Lajitas down to Santa Helena Canyon during Thanksgiving, but could not get ANY of the outfitters to give me a ride from the take out. They obviously were busy with customers paying for guided trips. This year I am trying to plan the same trip, also over the Thanksgiving holiday, and I was planning to (1) leave my girlfriend with the canoe at the put-in, (2) drive to the take-out in Santa Helena Canyon Overlook, (3) have someone drive me back to the put-in, so that when the trip is done, my car will be waiting there for me.

Are there any locals who might be willing to give me a ride for a reasonable fee?

Is the parking lot for the Santa Helena Canyon overlook safe to leave my car for a couple of days? Will the National Park Service allow me to park if I have a backcountry permit to do an overnight canoe trip?

Any advice from this community will be greatly appreciated.

JM
