Title: Crossing the BBNP fence from Private Land
Post by: Daryl on February 15, 2007, 07:46:54 PM
I plan to purchase a tract of land that borders BBNP.  The park has a barbed wire fence in that area.

Does anyone know if I can legally jump the fence (I have an annual pass)?

OR

Is it possible to install a gate or openning (similar to the one at Indian Head)?  If so, who would I contact for permission?  I'd be glad to cover all costs.

Of course you can. They're your public lands.

It would depend on who owns the fence. If owned by the NPS you'd contact the superintendent and go through whatever hoops they would make you jump through and pay whatever costs are involved.

Would this be easy or even possible? Who knows? This being a relatively non-standard request to a large bureaucracy, I'd not put a lot of hope in it happening.

If you own the fence, you can do whatever you want with it.

One thing to ascertain is whether the fence is actually on the property line, or one side or the other.

Also, is the fence jointly owned? With shared maintenance responsibilities?

just checking.  hoping you might have purchased it, then subdivide the land and sell me some of it.  i've alwayst thought that a grocery store/gas station/eatery would be good on the PG side of the park.

I would never subdivide a great piece like that one.  If i was ever blessed to afford and find a piece like that, I'd place it in a trust with a conservation easement.  I'd try to insure that it could never be developed (other than my own house and guest quarters :D ) or subdivided, just enjoyed by my family and friends (of course that would include BBC members :) ), and sell it to whatever organization could best preserve it IF the family ever became unable to manage it.
