Crowds in mid fall?
« on: August 06, 2019, 11:48:54 AM »
My plan is to visit Big Bend this year from October 27 - November 2.  I'm hoping to avoid crowds. I'll be backpacking in the Chisos starting Sunday a.m and leaving the park the following Saturday. Being as it will be during the school year and mostly weekdays, I'm hoping to have it pretty much to myself.  Does Big Bend usually have many people at these times?
Thanks

You should pretty much have it all to yourself and the weather should be turning to just about perfect.  Of the decent weather months (Oct.-March) October has the fewest backcountry visits of all followed by February.  What good timing!  Here is the Parks Statistics page.
temperatures exceed 100 degrees F
minimum 1 gallon water per person/day
no shade, no water

There was actually "moderate" usage of the Chisos camp sites back in 2017 for the time frame you referenced.  I suspect usage would be similar this year.

Unless it's Spring Break, Christmas, and Thanksgiving, crowds are not a worry in Big Bend.  You'll have a great time, just be careful of the club dragging floating gray head on Colima.

The temps in the upper elevations will be great, low to mid 50's at night and warm during the day (not blazing hot, but warm)

Group sites in the Chisos Basin are fully booked over Labor Day.
