Leave "quit" at the car.  Embrace the trail as your friend.  Expect to enjoy yourself, and to be amazed.

This is bad.  :willynilly:  I feel your pain.  :eusa_doh:

I'm reminded of Frozone from "The Incredibles".  "Where is my Super Suit?"

Partially. But if I understand Don, it’s not the gear, it’s the missed trip with his son.

The gear necessary for the trip was of the kind that had to be ordered.  I did order, but the stuff would not have come on time.

Could it have been borrowed?  I know a guy on your way (somewhat) to Big Bend who would loan you whatever he has.....

BELIEVE me - I tried to think of everything.  It is entirely possible that there is some magic solution out there somewhere that I missed.  The time factor (see above) played a huge part.

I’m sorry bro but I’m having a little trouble sympathizing with a man who is married to “the most patient woman on earth.” You’ve got no one to blame here.
Get some big plastic boxes from Target and get your gear in order and then get your ass in gear.
I call it my quick escape system. I can virtually throw my pack, bag, pad, poles, clothes and food in the Jeep along with the “big plastic box” and hit the road.

There’s an applicable pair of rules around my house: “bad planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on Dad’s”, on the other hand, “bad planning on Dad’s part constitutes an emergency on everyone’s”.
