Fire near Castolon
« on: May 22, 2019, 10:07:53 PM »
From the BBNP Facebook page: Wildland fire (updated 8:45pm): earlier this evening a wildland fire jumped the Rio Grande and has burned 50 acres within the park near Castolon. Cottonwood campground has been evacuated. Big Bend NP Wildland firefighters are on scene as well as Terlingua Fire & EMS. We ask that people avoid the Castolon area both for their safety and so that crews can operate as efficiently as possible. Please stay tuned for more updates tomorrow morning.

La Harmonia store/visitor center was destroyed, and one of the historic homes damaged. No loss of life.

Wow. Passing of an era. That makes me really, really sad. Glad everyone’s safe. I wonder if they’ll rebuild/replace.

This is from the NPS Facebook page:

"Castolon Fire Update: We are deeply saddened to report that last night the wildland fire dropped hot embers on the historic barracks, officers quarters, and restroom facilities at Castolon. These structures, which currently house the Castolon Visitor Center and La Harmonia store, as well as a park residence, have been damaged.

Wildland and structural fire crews worked through the night, with more crews on their way to help contain the fire. This is an ongoing situation, and we will update these posts when we have further information.

At this time, the Old Maverick Road, Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, and River Road West from Buenos Aires to Castolon are closed for visitor safety and for fire crews to work as efficiently as possible.

We want to thank the fire crews for their hard work and the public for their support and patience as we are working to contain this fire."

That is really too bad about the old historic buildings.

10 am NPS update

Castolon Fire Update

•   Background:  a wildland fire in Mexico was reported on 5/21, and monitored by park staff.  On 5/22, at approximately 6 pm, hot embers ignited fires on the U.S. side of the river near Castolon.  Wildland and structural fire crews were mobilized.  It quickly spread to the Castolon Historic District.

•   Structures damaged:
o   Barracks (Castolon VC and La Harmonia Store) -- severely burned
o   Bathrooms -- damaged
o   Officer’s quarters (residence) -- damaged

•   Closures:
o   Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive (at the 13/15 junction)
o   Old Maverick Road
o   River Road West (from Buenos Aires to Castolon)

•   Wildland fire crews worked through the night, and additional crews are on their way, with an expected 50 people by noon today.

•   This represents a huge loss for the park, and the history that we interpret.

•   We thank you for refraining from speculation or engaging in rumors.

•   We will keep the park’s Facebook (www.facebook.com/BigBendNPS) updated as information becomes available.

Castolon Fire (updated 10:50 am): We are deeply saddened to report that last night the wildland fire dropped hot embers on the historic barracks, officers quarters, and restroom facilities at Castolon. The barracks structure, which housed the Castolon Visitor Center and La Harmonia store, were extensively damaged.
