First trip to big bend coming soon
« on: July 16, 2018, 12:47:57 PM »
Hi, me, my wife and our 2 kids (5 years old son, and 1 year daughter), are wanting to go to big bend in August mainly to see the milky way. It'll be our first time there. It's about an 8 1/2 hour drive according to Google maps. I know it'll be extremely hot, so we want to hike early on, or towards late afternoon. But the night sky is the main reason of our trip. We want to stay at the chisos mountain Lodge. Is it a good idea to go around this time with our kids? Is there any difficulty getting there? Are there other things we can do with our little ones besides hiking that'll be fun for them. My wife is wondering if it'll all be worth it, the long drive to and back, the money, if it'll all be worth it to look at the milky way. Do you think it's a good choice to go if that's your main reason of going? Thank y'all!

Freggin A it'll be worth it!  No better place to see it,  except maybe in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.   If you go around the 11th, you'll see an amazing meteor shower too!

Be sure and check when the moon will be up and its phase.  It can be quite bright and interfere with your star gazing.

August 11 the is the new moon, and that's when we're thinking of going

You might consider trying to work in a star party at McDonald Observatory while you're in the neighborhood.
