Questions for the LADIES ONLY please...
« on: January 10, 2007, 08:37:53 PM »
1) Er...um...what do you do when it's that time of the month in back country and you are out on a multi day backpacking trip? I'm trying to figure out what is the best way to handle those times as far as storing used products before they can be carried out, etc...  Feel free to pm me the answer just in case curious male eyes are watching. lol

2) I'm trying to figure out ways to stay relatively clean without adding a ton of weight to my pack.  Obviously I can't bring all my skin care, etc...What do you use to wash your face with for instance? Or do you just let it all go and not worry about how dirty you get?

Thanks for any tips/suggestions you can think of too that make camping for a woman easier.

With regard to the second question there are all kinds of sanitary wipes out there these days. Put some in a ziplock bag.

Ok, so I was correct in my thinking about ziplock baggies, I just thought maybe there was a better way I wasn't aware of. Oh and the baby wipes...I didn't even think of those! Glad I asked. :)

Outside the tent...

thinking about ziplock baggies,

Need to keep those zippy bags outside the tent in the bear box.

Seems to me the zippy bag people need to tap into the backpacking / camping market and issue "black zippy bags" so that you can't see what's in them - kinda like why body bags are black - morbid thought.  Black bag means you don't want to see what's in it.  I wouldn't suggest storing food items in black bags.   :P

Great idea however about making them opaque. On a side note, I knew I was asking for it when I titled that thread Ladies Only.

Ah, just in case inquiring minds want to know, I talked to a girlfriend of mine tonight who is a medical doctor. She said I can buy opaque zip lock baggies that are pre-marked "bio-hazardous waste" at medical supply stores.  Good to know.

I LOVE the Idea of a Ladies Only thread!  Thanks for starting it.

I don't have to deal with the first part of your question.. But Shane is right about the bear box.  There are lots of critters out there and if one gets into your tent and tears open the bag, you will have a mess.

For your face, Pond's makes a "Cleansing and Makeup Remover Towelettes"  and they come in a travel pack with 15.  They are gentler on your face than baby wipes.  I got mine at Wal-mart where the travel size stuff is.

Don't wear makeup, even on the first day, and your face will stay cleaner. Do take something for your lips, though.  I like something with sunscreen in it.  They will get dry and chapped and that is no fun.

Good luck and please keep the Ladies Only questions coming.  Expect the men to answer, though.

All cleaning supplies, sunscreen, toothpaste, etc. should go in the bear box.  Anything with a scent (other than perhaps dirty clothes) is better off where the critters can't get to it.  If in doubt, put it in the box.

I really didn't want to butt in on your ladies only thread, but I have information on a product from my wife that may be useful...

It's a product that won't help you at "that time of month", but may help you during the course of the day of hiking or even in an unpleasant restroom on the road trip to Big Bend.  Some women are hesitant to use it I guess because it is not so "ladylike", but sometimes you just have to throw those conventions out (like in the middle of the night or on a freezing cold day).

The product that my wife uses is Freshette, but this page lists three other products in addition to Freshette.

If you have any questions, you can pm me and I'll give you my wife's email so you can ask her directly.  Or you can just ask me   :!:

Ok, I'm learning way more than I wanted to know, but a quick Google search for opaque ziploc bags for the backcountry turned up lots of websites with info relevant to this thread.  I'll leave it up to you ladies to refine the search and check out any of the websites.

The classic book How to Sh!t in the Woods might also be of use.

Goldilocks is right about the makeup. Dont wear any!  Dove makes these foamy up towelletes that you add water to that come unscented if you want more of a "soap" clean feeling. I LOVE those!

And I've planned my trips around certain times of the month, if you can...
Usually the ladies are not at full strength at that time either. :(

Great idea. I don't wear makeup other than a mineral based powder that serves as my sunscreen. I don't like the feel of lotiony sunscreen on my face because it's so heavy and greasy feeling. By the end of the day my face feels even grosser.  Plus, I have really sensitive skin and have to be careful what I put on it.
