It was a pleasant 62.0 F at 05:53 this morning in the Basin. A little more rain and I'll feel the tug!

I was looking for historical rainfall data and stumbled across the Iowa Mesonet, which has a nice visualization to help you see how actual rainfall compares with expected rainfall in any given month. For example, here's data for the Basin

Click "select from map" to select a different weather station. The data seems to go back a year or two depending on the station.
I roamed and rambled, and I foller'ed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was a'sounding
This land was made for you and me

WIth more rain in the forecast, the Basin has tallied 12.32" YTD. The long term average for for Jan-Aug is 12.49". So.... it looks like a good time to go.

Cloudy and rainy all week from 14 to 18 August. Cooler temperatures made for very pleasant day hikes in the mountains, provided you remembered to bring your rain gear.  :icon_biggrin: Not as much water flowing through Boot Canyon as I would have expected. (Here's 18 August.) However on 17 August the flow  of water on the west side -- visible from the lower part of the Laguna Meadow trail -- was truly impressive.  The only real negative aspect was that patches of the Laguna Meadow trail were just mud. The morning of 19 August (as I was leaving) was the first morning of clear blue sky.

The picture doesn't really represent the flow very well, in part, ironically because there's no sound. However I could hear the water long before I could see it.
Cheers,
Imre
