Yeah, I figured military was probably the answer but then had trouble wrapping my mind around any military scenario for the map area.

Took a couple of the old maps from this thread and overlayed them into Google Earth.  They looked pretty cool so I thought I'd share.  I'll do more later.  I'm impressed by the cartography skills from over a hundred years ago.  Pretty darn good.

Chisos Mountains - 1913
Bone Spring - 1903

Awesome job Lance.

I really like being able to see where the old roads and trails were and what do you know they all tend to follow the water...  ;)
Thank you, Lance!  :icon_cool:

A bunch of die-hards, I'm thinking. When it's too hot to hike, we just go "virtual."

I've stitched all the maps I could find from 1896 to 1930 for use in Google Earth.

Big Bend Historical Topo (1896-1930)

You can also adjust the transparency by clicking on the layer button and adjusting the slider.

Hey Lance, could you dumb it down for a guy who still doesn't have a cell phone and tell me what I need to do to see your .kmz maps?

All you need to do is download and install Google Earth.  That's it.
You can get it here.  It's easy and fast to install, just click 'Next' until it's finished.  After that you can open KML/KMZ files.  A KMZ file is nothing but a zipped up KML file.  I'll email you my 'special' KMZ file that's not quite ready for public consumption, but goes well with these maps.

Really well done, sir.  You very possibly have a fixation that is just as severe as the one Buck has for Cattail Canyon!

Stumbled across this new website that put up 92,000 geospatial PDFs from the USGS Historical Topographic Map Collection online.  Pretty cool stuff.

Here's a link to the Big Bend region with 7 time periods to explore.  Just click the top date ranges to switch out the mapsets.
