I, too, think instrumental.  For some reason, the main theme from "The Right Stuff" often comes to mind.
Excellent choice!

If you wanta tear up, go the the Rim and listen to Vide Cor Meum.
Leave "quit" at the car.  Embrace the trail as your friend.  Expect to enjoy yourself, and to be amazed.

Fernando Ortega's "Road Song", especially the first stanza:

How I love these roads,
every far and lonely highway,
through basin and range
And a desert that never ends -
a sky so wide
you can hear your heart turn quiet,
and then I listen for the voices of my friends.

That song gets played on every trip, either going to or coming from.

First trip my son and I made to the Big Bend area was Thanksgiving of 2013.  Highway 90 froze over and we spent 2 days camping in a motel in Alpine before we could head south.  Neither of us knew what to expect and our radio dial did circles when we hit "scan".  I plugged my Ipod in and hit random and Hotel California came on.  Only it was the Spanish version done by the Gypsy Kings.

Uncle Lucius, "End of 118".  A lyric driven suggestion.

"Any time you're throwin dirt you're losin ground."

+1 on Promontory (also great to get you going in those first few hundred yards after you've just hoisted your pack on your back)

I really like the suggestion of "Far From Any Road"; I hadn't heard that before. Here's an oldy - "Song of the Big Bend" by Jim Stricklan.
