Ok but see...I'm still going to try it anyway. You write with an authoritive air. Fine, but I'm not throwing yard dirt into my brand new filter cone. I'll test it in the Chihuahuan Desert. Ever been there? Beautiful and yet terrifying place! If my buddy is a weight-weenie, there must be such a thing as a water-weenie, eh?

I hope this isn't going to be you're only way to get water.  Betting your life on a method you have never tried could be a very unwise decision.

No ones betting lives here, maybe a few dollars on a pre-filter is all...  :eusa_eh:

My mistake, I didn't realize it was a pre-filter.  I thought it was some type of filter system.  That makes more sense.

Very authoritatively spoken.

You write with an authoritive air.
Since when has thoroughly explaining things become speaking with an "air" of authority?  Do you, or are you even able to, dispute any of my points?

Fine, but I'm not throwing yard dirt into my brand new filter cone.
Is Chihuahuan dirt special?  It's going to get dirty sometime, that's its sole purpose, and I would rather know how it performs before relying on it.  If you prefer spending time performing experiments with gear while hiking, feel free.  I prefer to do other things that I can't do while sitting at home on the couch.

I'll test it in the Chihuahuan Desert.
I assume you will also bringing an additional proven system for providing potable water, or are prepared to wait for the ~4 hour dwell time for most chemical treatments when used with particulate laden water.  Wait, no need for that.  It's already been tested by your friend with tap water.  No way to dispute those results.  And since he hasn't posted any real world usage results to his page, it must have worked flawlessly.

Ever been there?
Science.  Ever heard of it?

Beautiful and yet terrifying place!
Physics class. Intellectual, yet full of scary math.

If my buddy is a weight-weenie, there must be such a thing as a water-weenie, eh?
Don't forget to trim off the excess 7mm off your shoe laces.  Grams add up to tons, you know.

Very authoritatively spoken.

Thanks but I'd call it "matter of fact" rather than authoritative since I'm not trying to take anyone to school.

I guess, just when you try it.

Do you, or are you even able to, dispute any of my points?

Nope. I'm just not arguing.

Is Chihuahuan dirt special?

Yep. Ever seen any?

Fine. Test your own gear.

Thanks. I do feel free especially on a solo hike.

I'm thinking you don't get off it very much.

Are we going back to school now? Don't worry about me. I'll be fine.

Science. Ever heard of it?

I think so. A time or two.

Took it in high school. I didn't think it was all that scary.

More Science? I'm still not scared.

This one's for Cliff - real world gear testing. This is my 1micron polyester sock filter after pre-filtering about 2 gallons of Rio Grande River water through it. Granted, the water was not holding much silt - mostly it was just cloudy. The water flowed through nicely and left the faint stain you see in the picture. I pre-filtered into my Sawyer gravity filter and then treated with Katadyn Micropur tablets before drinking.
