4 day 3 night backpack suggestions for BBRSP
« on: January 23, 2019, 08:45:48 AM »
Hi, Can anyone give me a few route suggestions for a 4-day backpack?  I am looking for a few water sources en route (not the river) and I want to avoid the crowd on the Rancheros loop.  I am not opposed to the Ranchieros area if we could leave the main trail and do some cross country options.  Maybe a point of interest off in the distance (with a spring somewhere) that we can hike to, explore the area and then head back?  Like everyone else, my BBNP plans are not looking good.  The trip is Feb 6th.  Also, I just got off the phone with BBRSP and the lady suggested that they may start limiting the number of permits b/c of the surge of folks and she suggested I have a back up plan and be flexible.

(1) If I am not mistaken, the Rancherias Loop is not crowded.

(2) I look forward to answers to your question.  I want to start doing more in BBRSP.
Leave "quit" at the car.  Embrace the trail as your friend.  Expect to enjoy yourself, and to be amazed.

I think all of the BBNP backpackers are looking for the next best thing and it sounds like they are ending up on the Rancherias loop.  If someone has been there in the last few days, correct me if I am wrong.

I had a plan I had to abort due to illness but I have a suggestion.

Start at the Contrabando trailhead. Hike north following the western part of the Dome trail until you reach the mine complex then follow Fresno Canyon. You'll find water at Crawford-Smith. From there, you've got a good jumping off point to explore Mexican Falls and Chimney Rock. (That's as far as I made it - illness made me turn back). That would make a straightforward 3 day hike. If you want a 4th day, add  the east side of the Dome trail. There is supposed to be a spring over there but I didn't get over that way.

Fresno Creek canyon that parallels Fresno Divide trail is spectacular and lots of water but you have to bushwhack a bit to find the entrance at the south end. When I aborted, I took this canyon back to the car - shorter route and water available.

Talk to folks in the know to refine this idea, just my $0.02.
Take a course in good water and air; and in the eternal youth of Nature you may renew your own. Go quietly, alone; no harm will befall you. - John Muir
