Anybody know what this is and what it is used for?
« on: February 05, 2017, 07:35:44 PM »
First time posting..

In December of 2015 a few friends and I camped out at Las Burras #1 and did some exploring in the canyons to the East near Oso Spring. Just North West of the spring we came upon this small box that was similar to a Pelican case strapped to a rock on a boulder with rope running to a sort of trip wire. In the pictures you can see how all traffic in the canyon would be funneled to where the trip stick is. Any idea what this is? Needless to say we didn't mess with it and left it alone. No markings on the box, however, it did look like there were some electrical connections on the top for a battery or antenna??

I would be very wary of that thing if I had stumbled across it.  Although it's probably just for data gathering, it seems like they could have placed a placard or sign next to it asking people not to touch it.  Without that, it's a lot creepier.

I agree! Was really wary it could have been poison for nuisance animals. Maybe Ranger Tim can shed some light.

It looks a bit like the remote seismic detectors that CBP used along the border in the Southern AZ around where I used to live near Sasabe. That said, I 'm not aware of any current science projects that would be using instruments, so I would guess border patrol. They don't exactly keep us abreast of their activities, though I would say that it seems to me like kind of a waste of effort putting a movement sensor in a park during the busy season.

I was going to guess a hobbled Huey, Dewey, or Louie (proto-R2-D2s) from Silent Running.  Maybe one of the domes from the U.S.S. Valley Forge crashed in the Bend?

Side note: Didn't someone post a video a couple years back of a remote camera they set up in the park?

Does that qualify me as old and eccentric?

Nah.

But the real question is: How many had to go look up the reference to understand the comment?

However, only Dewey survived. So Huey and Louie could not have been there.

Old and eccentric here, too. Possibly zluikens' device is used to catch things that are silently running.  ;)
