Title: Bar in the Park?
Post by: Jimbow on January 01, 2017, 09:56:57 AM
My daughter was telling me about a bar in the park? On the honor system? Or were they confused and broke into someone's private place?

The lodge has a full service bar where the original coffee shop (and later buffet) was. Not sure what all that space has been used for over the years. You might miss it if going into the dining area as it is behind you as you enter. There is a photo on the Lodge FB page of the coffee shop setup. I did start humming the Ballad of Davy Crockett when I saw the title.

For those of you under 40:

Born on a mountain top in Tennessee
Greenest state in the land of the free
Raised in the woods so he knew ev'ry tree
Kilt him a b'ar when he was only three
Davy, Davy Crockett,
King of the wild frontier!

That got Phil Collins interested in The Alamo. Eventually he became the largest private collector of Alamo artifacts and memorabilia.

I did find this.....

Highlights of day two were finding a bar in the middle of the desert that had COLD BEER, endless desert scenery, and water. (http://theradavist.com/2016/01/big-bender-ty-hathaway-and-jesse-scarantino/#1)

I must be blind. I'm missing the reference in the second link.

Thank you.

Do a text search (Cntl+F) for "Solitario Bar" and you will find it and the picture.

I shouldn't have been looking while using my cell. Thank you. I see the Keep Out sign. So one account has people enjoying the cold beer, the other has the person staying far away. I want to know . . . the rest of the story.

Not much to say here other than the Solitario Bar is equal parts recreational get-away and art installation. It is, however, all on a private inholding within the park that predates the park's acquisition by the state. There are several dozen inholdings within the park and we ask that park visitors respect private ownership and to not trespass within them.

Thank you. Just so I am clear they do *not* want people at the bar.

I think that they would rather folks respect their property, but are also realistic regarding the location of said property. I think that most people just wander up on the place with no sense of what it is and don't realize that it's private until they are there.

So I just got back from BBRSP (And working on a trip report), but couldn't resist replying here.
I have been trying to get info regarding the Solitario Bar for 2 years. A couple acquaintances hinted at it's existence but never gave me the full scoop.
The "driveway" is sort of hidden.
There IS a "Private Property" and a "Members Only" sign in the driveway. I found them on my hike out of the property.
I picked up some trash I found, so I feel like I at least did a little service on my visit.
We wandered in, looked around, took some photos and left. Next time, if I remember, I'm going to donate a bottle of good whiskey.

Same here. When my daughter mentioned it I did a quick search and found nothing. It wasn't until this week I thought to ask here.

I would really like to meet the owners and buy them a good bottle.

So just curious if anyone had anymore info on this place?  I heard about it long ago, and it's been a personal bucket list visit place for me, but I can't find any more info about it than what's in this thread.  I'm still unclear if it's even ok to visit the place or if it's private property.

It is private property.
It is easily accessible from the trail and is fun to visit. I think if you're respectful of the property, they don't mind you looking around.
I'd heard some folks had gone there from their camp one night to indulge in some adult beverages.  They claim they had a few shots from the stocked bar, and left a bottle for the next visitors.
That was the first tale of the Solitario bar I had heard.
My own experience was finding it on the way out of Tres Papalotes with some friends.  We took some photos then continued on our way.
