Title: Ham Radio Monitoring in BBRSP?
Post by: BlindWilly on September 16, 2018, 01:12:40 PM
Hi Ranger Tim,
Do you guys use Ham Radio's in the park to monitor and/or talk to the folks out in the wilderness?
One or two of my group have them on  their rigs, we were curious if you have a setup at Sauceda.

We do not. While we have a radio system at BBRSP, it is not terribly effective owing to the geography of the park. Typically, in an emergency, we augment the system with satellite phones, but those are rarely very effective either. Yet another reason to make good decisions and remember where you are when you are visiting the park.

Thank you.
Yup, we have them as they have a better range than the CB's we use.
I'm still studying for my exam. Hopefully by this holiday.

It looks like the Big Bend Amateur Radio Club maintains a wide-area linked repeater system.  Info here:  http://www.bigbendarc.com/repeaters/

... and as a member of BBARC, I and others monitor the Christmas mountain repeater.   Get your 2 meter license and you can chat all day on our repeaters (but please don't!)

Don't be shy about yelling for help if you really need it.  I may do nothing more than turn your info over to the Park Ranges or the Sheriff but at least I'm step in getting you the help you may need.
