Title: Is it possible to get a last minute campsite Christmas week?
Post by: EmilyP on December 14, 2018, 12:14:23 PM
I've been planning a trip to big bend from December 23-31, but I'm trying to figure out if I need to have a plan B in case the government shutdown prevents the campground at the national park from working out as planned.  I have done very little research about Big Bend Ranch, but it does look like there are good campsites I could reach with my not high clearance 2 wheel drive.  How difficult would it be to show up on the 23rd and get a good spot that I could reach with my pansy car?  Do those tend to be full on the 23rd of December?  Anyone have experience with a last minute spot in BBRSP Christmas week?

Yes, depending on the crowds.  Usually it's quieter in BBRSP.
Here's the campsite page: https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/big-bend-ranch/fees-facilities/campsites
The good thing is they take reservations:  https://tpwd.texas.gov/business/park_reservations/
Lots to see and do at the State Park, and the staff seems to be so much friendlier!

Possible? Certainly.

Probable? Not so much, at least in the national park.

Timing is everything that week. Always have an alternate plan.

By getting there on the 23rd, I would say yes.  Most of the crowd will arrive either at the end of Christmas day or the 26th.  Still it is one of the busiest times of years but again by getting there before Christmas it will really improve your odds.  BBRSP will be wide open.  I have been there during Christmas week when we were the only campers in the entire interior of the park.

I'm hoping that's how it is this year... darn near empty in the interior.   8)
I've got a group of 5 rigs that will be camping and wheeling our way east to west in BBRSP this year.

The interior is very unlikely to completely fill, but the easy to access 2wd sites along river road can fill during busy times.
