Length of stay at BBRSP
« on: April 22, 2013, 08:05:38 AM »
Is there a limit on the number of total days one can camp at a state park such as BBRSP?

From their page: "The maximum stay is 14 nights (total) and seven consecutive days in any one backcountry zone." - I am assuming the number 14 pertains to one visit - you would be free to come back and stay more if you wanted to, no?

Thanks,
OD

I'm pretty sure I was told this is an annual limit but that they don't keep up with the number of nights a person does it.  The idea is to keep squatters from basically living in the park.  It would be a cheap way to go for sure--14 days for what, $10?

That's what I was afraid of.

From the Texas State Parks FAQ:  http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/faq/spdest/state_parks/
Quote

Stay Length

Q: How long may I stay at a state park?

A: The maximum length of stay is 14 consecutive days except where other limits have been established by the park manager; some parks offer weekly/monthly/seasonal rates. Check with the reservation agent when making reservations.

As a general rule, it appears to be 14  consecutive days, but, to be sure, call the reservation agent as recommended.

As mentioned above, I believe the 14 day limit was to give the park a legal grounds to run off squatters.  The park managers have the discretion to adjust this, so it is worth asking.  BBRSP has so few visitors, relatively speaking, that space is not likely to be an issue.  If you have a good story - writing a book, working on a photo essay, research, etc. - you might be able get an extension.  I would contact the park directly - the reservation folks don't have the authority to approve this.

On another note - hats off to anyone with the skills and fortitude to spend 14+ days in the backcountry of BBRSP!  I look forward to those stories!

No, my fear was that it is cumulative 14 days for the whole year since you could come back multiple times in one year and max out those 14 days... :)

I asked Dave Long @ Warnock about this recently. Just like the NP, the 14 days only applies to one consecutive stay. However, the NP has (I believe) a 30-night annual limit.

BBRSP doesn't appear to have an annual limit, though abuse of this would obviously result in a new (and specific) rule, so let's hope no one does anything silly...

What do you plan to do out there for 2 weeks?
I've thought about it some, once I retire.  A body could drive his Jeep loaded with gear within a short hike of some nice back country camping areas. Just thinking - I might could find my right mind with 2 weeks of solitude in the desert.

I am not sure I would stay that long but I wanted to know if it is cumulative for the year or only over one stay.

Wife and I are planning on taking off on our horses and riding cross country. We have been preparing for this for a few years now.

A cross country ride would be fun. Are you taking a pack animal for your gear and feed? My avatar is a picture of my shadow I took from horseback in the Big Bend, riding with my granddaughter.

No pack animal - we plan on moving between campgrounds and places we know we can stay at for starters. We have a truck tent we plan on using - have been testing it on shorter trips and the whole setup for a while now. The first stage will be that. For the second stage - yes, we plan on using a pack animal.

Nice photo :)
