Rancherias Loop from Campsites
« on: September 03, 2007, 10:12:18 AM »
Does anyone know if you can access the Rancherias Loop trail from the primitive campsites up in the Big Bend Ranch State Park? It looks like there are jeep roads coming down from the campsite area. I don't really want to leave my vehicle down by the road (FM170) for several days.

There is a road going more or less north from the northeastern end of the trail, but I don't know what it provides access to.  When I asked about rescue time and procedures for a solo trip there about 8 years ago, the ranger at Warnock said they send folks in on horseback from the two trailheads on 170 from the south and also from the north, so at that time there would be northern access, at least.  I suggest you talk to BBRSP personnel.

Soon.  Very Soon.

The new BBRSP "use plan", etc. should be implemented soon.  This will allow for cross country hiking, zone camping, extensive opening of new jeep trails into the interior, more campsites, etc.  Right now, today, cross country hiking/backpacking is not allowed.  I think if you check out the thread on BBRSP you will find a compendium of information on the new plans.  I was recently in touch with the staff out there and they are working full steam on this since they have $.

When is soon?  I'd expect within the next 3-6 months.  Might seem like a long time, but considering the age of the Solitario.... :)

Thanks for the replys. I guess I didn't realize the hiking was so restricted. I'll check with the staff.
