Site suggestion for our second park visit
« on: January 24, 2019, 04:43:03 PM »
We will be going back to BBRSP this year. This will be our second time in the park. Last year we went during the month of May and stayed at the Guale 2. We really enjoyed the site but since we would like to get to know other areas in the park we are looking for suggestions on where to stay. Most likely we will go during the month of May again. We are probably only going to be there for a few nights just as we did last year.

My wife read something about a water fall at BBRSP. I did a quick search and I believe she was referring to Madrid Falls. Is Chorro Vista a good site to stay at in order to hike to Madrid Falls? Or do you recommend a different site? Are the falls accessible?

Thanks

I enjoyed Las Burras 2 the last time I was out that way.  We hiked the Ojito Adentro trail.  There was not much water flowing but supposedly in the wetter months there is.  I have not explored the Madrid Falls area.  Las Burras is very isolated but it was a great site.  I think the next time I go I will try to find something with better access so I can see more of the park.

Las Burras 1 is great too. Getting there is almost like going to Guale.
On the way to Madrid Falls, is Mexicano #2, I really enjoyed that campsite. You're almost surrounded by hills, it makes great sunrise's and sunsets.
I'm not really a hiker, so I'll let others comment on that, but the areas around these 2 sites seem like great exploring.

Chorro Vista is a great site, but it is also pretty exposed and lacks a shade shelter. There are several miles of trails in the vicinity of the campsite, but the falls themselves are not accessible from the bottom due to a very sensitive riparian habitat. As you likely remember, May is one of the hottest months of the year, so do be prepared for very hot afternoons and warm nights. There are several other campsites up on Cerro Mexicano (the name of the landform where Chorro is found) and all have unique views to offer. Just know that the road to the top is arguably one of the more challenging in the park and has scared more than one visitor from attempting it.
