Truck camper camping
« on: November 18, 2015, 10:52:10 PM »
Hello everyone.   I plan on visiting BBRSP with my truck camper just before thanksgiving 2015.  I have a one ton dually 4x4 with a big camper on the back.  See the photo.  I have read the BBRSP camping guide but now the time is near.  Imacomin.  Any recommendations on camping spots?  I have only one spare tire, i can deal with pinstriping as long as its moderate and buffable.  Ha ha.

I also plan on being there for thanksgiving and have made a reservation with Bridget.  Has anyone been there for the feast?

Hey, that's quite a rig! My advice would be to keep it on the main park road and look at camping at Papalote Colorado, Los Ojitos, or at the interior campground at South Lleyva. The key to your trip is going to be taking it VERY slow. The roughest parts of the road are at miles 13 and 8 East and that stretch between Sauceda and South Leyva campground. Your clearance looks good, but there are going to be a couple of drainage crossings that you will want to take at an angle as opposed to straight on.

I've done Thanksgiving every year for the last four years and it is always quite a spread. Bridgette raises the bar with the quality of her cooking and I sincerely doubt that anyone will go away hungry. As will all big dinners, try an be as forthright as possible about any dietary restrictions or allergies that you or your party might have,... that is not a thing to figure out on the spot. Also, bring boots and a hat for a little after-dinner hike around the nature trail to get some good twilight views and walk off all that turkey!

Glad you are coming out for a visit and I look forward to seeing you there!

Thanks Ranger Tim.  I'll do more research based on your recommendations.  No dietary restrictions with us.  The menu looks just right for my wife's tapeworm.

One more question regarding thanksgiving.  With the hike being at twilight I presume it'll be dark when the hike finishes.  Do you think there will be any potential issues driving back to the campsite after dark?

Get a campsite close to Sauceda off the main road. South Leyva has eight sites and a composting toilet so that might be the easiest option.
