You Better Like Zone Camping
« on: October 14, 2017, 11:22:03 AM »
With gas being as cheap as it is, and, dare I say, the popularity of BBChat, it seems there is already a trend of high occupancy coming our way.  Look at the last 2 weeks:
http://75.41.147.131/permits/welcome.php    Enter;  Click on Step 2;  then hit the " < 2 weeks "  button on top.  Copied links won't work for me.

There are already  a bunch of people coming to the park, and it is not even hunting season yet!   Still plenty of space out in the zones, but it is also still pretty dang hot out there.

Looking at last year, (Change the date to 2016) it is about the same up front at the car spots, but not as busy in the assigned Chisos backpacking spots.   Pretty busy then too, but it looks like less in the back country.

As always, it means there are 2 sides to the situation of more people coming to the Bend.   You can come up with your own.  My main concern is them crazy rangers making more rules as they did last year with Chisos-bear closures on the fly, and closing down parts of the park because a bear box may get full.   As Forest Gump said, " It's like a box of chocolates".

I bring this up so that any of y'all that have been toying with the idea that backpacking sounds like a cool thing to do, and you HAVE to have your BB fix, the new popularity and unpredictable rule changes could be the motivator to get you into the zone back country.  It looks like the necessity of Plan B, C and D are going to be required sooner than later this year.   Just Do It!
First Russian Collusion, then Mueller, then Obstruction, then illegal payment to Stormy Daniels, then tax returns. Now no formal vote on impeachment for a 30 min. phone call to Ukraine

No crime. No evidence, just more secret investigations

Once again I probably waited too long.
Oh well. Parts of the Continental Divide haven’t been ruined yet.
And I’m not saying where on an open Internet forum.

The problem with great backpacking spots is they attract too many backpackers.  :icon_cry:  I may have to start exploring the state park again.

I'm reminded of the immortal words of Groucho Marx's telegram to the Friar's Club of Hollywood: "PLEASE ACCEPT MY RESIGNATION. I DON'T WANT TO BELONG TO ANY CLUB THAT WILL ACCEPT PEOPLE LIKE ME AS A MEMBER".
"The trick, William Potter, is not minding that it hurts."

2016 looks pretty similar to this year on El Campo, if anything more folks in the Chisos.
temperatures exceed 100 degrees F
minimum 1 gallon water per person/day
no shade, no water

To confirm, you can only make reservations through el campo 24 hours in advance?
Couldn't see that in writing (I'm blind sometimes), but that seems what the reservations afford.
Needless to say, I've never used ec.

Not a reservation, just entering your information online so the rangers can pull it up when applying for your permit. And you don't even get 24 hours, as the system is cleared of the previous day's worksheets at midnight.

El Campo is not a reservation system, it is a "get a head start on filling out the paperwork" system.  The idea is you can get the form filled out ahead of time so when you arrive at the backcountry office they can pull it up on their computers (if you remember your ID number) and everyone can save time by having the information all filled out ahead of time.  You don't have to use it, and using it or not using it has zero effect on your ability to get a permit.  You can only submit the form after midnight the day you plan to visit the backcountry office in person, because at the stroke of midnight (or so I'm told) the system clears everything out and starts over for the next day.  That's what I know about it, or think I know anyway.

True, but you can request that the first day of your permit to be "tomorrow".
