Advice please for an over excited English woman
« on: June 19, 2011, 05:15:24 PM »
Hi guys,
My 17yr old daughter and I are visiting friends in Houston 1st two weeks in July and want to drive from San Antonio for a couple of days in the park. Ideally we will ride on the river and camp out overnight. Obvioualy as 2 gorgeous women  :icon_wink: it would be best to do this through a company, I would be grateful for recommendations for this particular scenario. I also love the sound of the Mountain Lodge, do you think it would be best to stay there 1st and do the trip on the way back or vice versa?

I must admit I am a bit worried about the heat, any ideas to keep as cool as possible?

Also would love any other advice you can think of.

Whether or not any of the outfitters are offering overnight float trips may depend on how much rain the area gets before your trip. See http://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/outfitters.htm for a list of tour operators. Far Flung is probably the biggest one and is usually the first one I hear being recommended, but all of them do a good job.

As far as how to keep cool, plan on doing any hiking as early in the day as possible. Take more water than you think you'd ever need, wear proper clothing and a wide-brimmed hat, and remember... it's a dry heat!

In July, staying in the Chisos Basin, whether in the lodge or camping would be much more pleasant than at lower elevations. Really, I would suggest the lodge if you are not experienced campers -- but it's not cheap. Also, this has been an exceptionally dry year in Big Bend, so grass and plants will all be burned up by heat. However, it might have rained by early July. Hope so. Look carefully at the National Park Service BB web site and search this site also for relevant info.

Thanks guys,
I am so excited about this, for me it is a return visit as I used to live in Houston and did a few road trips, now I want my daughter to love it as much as I did.

I am hoping there will be some rain by then and will be watching the weather and am leaving the dates abit flexible to take advantage of any higher water levels.

I'm not sure if this will happen in time for your trip, but there is a possibility of water being released from the dam at Luis Leon in the Rio Conchos. If this happens (or already happened), there should be good flow (1500-3000 cfs) on the Rio Grande this weekend, lasting for a couple weeks.

Richard, where do you find info on scheduled releases from Luis Leon?  I have never been able to find it.  In the past, when the flow comes up due to releases from that dam, the river has always run back down before I could make a trip.  It would be nice to find out about scheduled releases a few weeks in advance.  Thanks!

Hey There 'brit,

I've gotta say I'm very impressed that you've decided to make it to the Bend!  I only wish you could have your first adventure with wetter weather and cooler temps. :(  I hope you don't hold that against it!  It's still quite a sight to see!  Sadly,  we haven't had enough rain for there to be much green.  You will be treated to the most spectacular scenery and the most unbelievable starry skies.

Be sure to let us know how you trip went!

I got it via email from someone who lives out that way.

This comes from THE expert, in this matter. You should listen.
Stay thirsty, my friends.
