The River is really booking!!!
« on: September 01, 2010, 12:29:16 PM »
I checked the Daily Report today for the Rio Grande river levels. The Report shows the river is flowing 1750 cfs at Castolon. I am starting to get concerned for my planned river trip. I spoke to a ranger at the NP but she was clueless. Called Far Flung who said if we portage Rock Slide we should be fine but was showing some concern.

Has anyone ran Santa Elena at this water level?

We will be paddling two hard shell kayaks. One is a rec boat and one is a crossover (rec/whitewater boat). we both have intermediate water skills.

What do you think...should I call it off?

I?m not exactly sure of the river level on this trip but it was rather pushy and also in a raft. Santa Elena Canyon circa 1990 or 91 If the river was at this level when we started, I probably would have aborted the trip. The Rock Slide just provides too much of a pucker factor for me these days.  :willynilly: :icon_eek:

The advice received from Far Flung (or any one of the river guide services) is probably your best source of information.

I spoke to Mike at Desert Sports. He acted like its not a big deal. He said the water is really ideal and that we shouldn't have any problems with intermediate skills.

He also said he has never heard of portaging the Rock Slide. I know it can be done but have never done it. They do look like big rocks but...big rocks or not... there is a lot of room on the Mexico side.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
