Upcoming canoe trip
« on: July 07, 2010, 09:11:50 AM »
If anyone with some experience on the river could take a minute, I'd sure appreciate it....

In about a week, boy scouts from my son's troop will be taking their canoes down the river, putting in at Rio Grande Village.  They plan on spending about 4 days on the river and are using a local guide company-  No problem so far.  I was told that they plan on spending a couple nights on the Mexican side of the river...  Now this isn't so much of a problem, either, if they're back up against a 1000 foot cliff.   What bothers me is that one of the nights on the Mexican side is spent on a bend that has no natural barrier, just a beach and some rocks.

What do you all think about this?  Would anyone consider this dangerous?

Thanks for any input.

You might want to check those river levels right now; recent wx events may exceed the 2008 flooding.

This area of the border isn't having the same problems that other areas of the border are having.  It's very remote.  Violence is happening in border towns were the drug cartels live and work.    Buck is right, flooding may put a stop to the trip before it even happens.

Flooding aside, this is a safe area with regards to interactions with the few residents.

Thanks for the information.   Flooding doesn't appear to be an issue between Rio Grande Village and La Linda.  The guide company is Desert Sports, which seems to be one of the better ones, so I guess they know what they're doing.  The kids ought to have a great time.  Wish I was going with them.

Thanks again for the replies.

A neighbor of mine was canoeing in that area.  He said some folks had backpacks and wanted to trade food- all they had was canned tuna.  They proceeded to scale large cliffs on the US side.  Everyone stayed friendly.   Same kind of trip 3-4 days downstream from the park.
Ton of rain south of Alpine in the past week and more today.  The river will stay up for awhile here although not at the levels we had for the Presidio flood year before last.
