They are doing a great deal of road work in the park.  I was told that the Basin Campground would be closed the last three weeks in October for road work.
WATER, It does a body good.

Every paved service in the park is being redone.  Road, parking lot, campground, all of them are being resurfaced between now and January.  They are also raising the two low crossings between Castolon and Santa Elena.

I thought the same thing.  You'd think they would be doing it now or last month.

I seriously doubt that they would completely shut down the most popular camping area for such a long time.  Certain areas or roads in the campground maybe closed periodically, but not the entire thing.

But this is the federal government we're talking about here.

No word on closure dates? The BiBe NP web site still doesn't have anything on when and how long. I was planning a quick trip out to try for a couple of nights of comet viewing from October 6- 9 so I'm waiting anxiously to see if maybe the closure will happen after those dates.  :crossedfingers: :crossedfingers:

Why would the pick October of all months?  One would think the slow summer months would be better timing, unless the feds overseeing it decided it was too hot for them.  :rolling:

I just called this morning and the voice (male) on the phone said that although earlier they were considering partial closure and work arounds, just yesterday the decision was made to close the whole campground from the 4th through 29th of October. He said the best way to complain was to email the superintendant.  It seems like an awfully long time to pave those little lanes so I've got to assume other work will be going on. I've seen huge Wally-World lots get graded and paved in less than 2 weeks including electrical work for lights and cameras and painting.

Fortunately for me I'll be staying in Terlingua, but it really a sucky situation  for a lot of others that have planned their trip for months only to find out the NPS hasn't done any planning 'til the last minute. (gosh, I sound like presidio :icon_eek:)

I was planning a trip for Oct 1-about the 6th. I'll still do the Basin for the first 3 nights and then backcountry for the last couple. Still is seems like a pretty short notice only announcing the closure last week. Not very friendly for the folks that plan months ahead of time. I think I'll email the super.

I don't really have a dog in the hunt, but before you complain........... could you imagine paving roads in BiBe June - September?
