Your recommendation for campgrounds - top 2 choices
« on: July 11, 2012, 11:54:36 AM »
What would be your two top picks for campgrounds (Class B 30amp electric, clean showers, for 2 adults - no children) ?
These are the ones I found online:
BJ's
Big Bend Resort
Stillwell Store & RV Park
Maverick Ranch

There were also 2 mentioned under Study Butte but I could not find any info on them or rates
Study Butte RV  Park
Terlinqua Oasis RV

You didn't mention Rio Grand Village within the park, but that would be my first choice.  Clean showers and electricity appears to be top priority it seems.

I'm not sure if TR has an RV Park -- I don't think so.

I'd say RGV or the Study Butte RV Park. The showers are better at SB, and you can't beat the location for general access to BiBe...

We stayed in the Study Butte RV park on 118 between the park gate and 170 this past march, the heat and flies ran us out of the park after bout 4 days so we took refuge, wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again, nothing fancy, no pool but it’s got a cemetery, BBQ pavilion and lots of character and a clean bathroom/shower.  Nice folks run this place I think it was $22.

Thanks for your comments.

I didn't mention Rio Grande Village RV park as I did not like what I read about it - an asphalt  parking lot which gets very hot.

That's why I was hoping to hear from someone that  has stayed at BJ, Maverick, etc.

We will probably spend one night dry camping at Chisos Basin.   Hopefully it isn't too hot at night.

I do prefer to avoid bugs - flies, mosquitoes, etc.

There are two areas at RGV that can accept RVs--the hot parking lot one and this one

Yep, the main RGV campground has spacious sites and some are pretty shady. Now like the Basin CG, it would be without hookups as well.

OK.  That's why OTRA wasn't including it.  I thought they had some spaces with hookups.  My bad.

The basin should be cooler and Class B shouldn't be too long.  OTRA, what kind of camper do you have?

I wouldn't hesitate to use the RVG RV campground. We stay in it all the time when we take the motor home. The sites on the south side have large grass areas behind them and there is an opening to a nice open area that runs along the river and you can use to cut over to the group campground. Plenty of grass, good place for the dogs. Several trees to set the chairs out under (just don't leave them there when you are gone, had a popup rains storm and the top of the tree behind us came off while we had been up to the basin on one trip).

I've used the one in Study Butte once with the Motorhome and in a tent. Not really made for tents. The RV site was OK, but I prefered RGV (we used it on the last night when heading out through Alpine). All gravel and little grass or shade for that matter. Was busy with some type of caravan group that weekend.

I usually stay away from elec hookups and sites that allow because I enjoy the quite, so not much help but the last time I stayed at Terlingua Ranch they had some pretty nice RV sites.

If you can live without any hook ups and it's during cool weather Cottonwood is pretty peaceful. I had it to myself for 4 days last time, well me, a horned owl, some turkeys, a coyote, a mess of javalinas and a cow a wearing a bell on the Mexican side. I gotta get my butt back there.

It will be June so I do want to have an electric hookup for A/C, refrig, microwave.
Remember words in "the Who" song  I'm an airconditioned gypsy.........

Also prefer to stay off dirt/gravel roads.   Isn't Terlinqua Ranch on a gravel road?

BJ's and Maverick Ranch look good from their websites but sometimes websites don't tell you what it is really like.

I appreciate the comments and suggestions.   Thanks everyone.

Terlingua is about 10 miles of gravel, if you come in from the Marathion side it used to be rather rough.

The ranch road is mostly paved. The last 3 miles are gravel, but I wouldn't hesitate to take my motorhome down it (but then I've had mine on some real rough gravel roads in the past).

I have not been to Big Bend for over 30 years, but was there frequently in the 60's and 70's. I'm looking for some dry camping spots for a large 5th wheel. My grandparents and relatives used to haul their travel trailers into primative areas on the river such as Solis, at the foot of the Mariscal Canyon. We used it as a base camp and raft/fished through Mariscal Canyon each day. It was very rough getting their rigs in and I suppose it would not be possible to get a 43' 5er into an area like that. I would like to find one that might be a little less difficult, but off the beaten path. Shooting for early April. Thanks in advance for any advice.
