2011 Calendar Voting
« on: November 12, 2010, 04:31:30 PM »
Start by going here: http://www.bigbendgallery.com/uploads/files/cal2011/index.htm
Click on any of the thumbnails to view the full-size version. Pick your top 13 (you might want to write them down), then come here and vote. Voting will continue for 8 days until Saturday 11/20. Each member gets to vote once and results will not be shown until after the voting is finished. Once you vote you can't change your vote, so pick carefully. Good luck to all the BBC photographers!

It appears that on some of the images there appear to be artifacts.  This can happen if a jpeg is copied a couple or more times.  Speaking purely for my submissions, my images do not have any of the artifacts that show up when you click on them in my full size images.

An example of what I am referring to is image number 010.

When you compare it to this one you will not see any aritifacts.

I only mention this so the viewer will be able to take that into account when making their choices.

RichardM: Originally you asked for only landscape oriented images, but I see some portrait oriented images listed for voting.  Will you be able to use the portrait oriented images in the calendar?

I neglected to mention that just about all of the image files (including yours) have been run through the Image Resizer 2.1 tool to speed up downloads and save file server space. People are more than welcome to go back to the nomination topic and view the "original" version of any of the pictures. Another thing I forgot to mention is that the images were initially opened and saved with IrfanView, so some image degradation may have occurred at that time.

Which brings us to the next topic: What happens after we pick the winners?
After we get the top 13 picked, I'll need everyone who has one of their photos selected to get me the highest resolution copy they have available. I'll then resize as necessary, add the copyright notice, title, etc. and integrate it into the calendar. I'm limited on tools (cuz I'm too cheap to buy PhotoShop), so the "cleaner" the image you send me, the better. We'd prefer no watermarks on the images themselves. If anyone would prefer to keep their real world identity private, I can use their BBC screen name. Just let me know your preference when you give me your picture file.

Yup, they'll just have a lot of space on either side. Something to take into consideration when voting.

Thanks Richard!  Has the ability to vote on multiple images at once been corrected?

After you checked off the ones you want to vote for, and hit vote button, you should see all of your selections in bold font when you come back to this page.

I hope a brief highjack is OK --  :eusa_angel:

Can one of our photog experts (TJ, Jeff B, MOT, etc) help me understand this:

** If I download a batch of jpegs from the camera to folder-A, then mirror that folder to folder-B for backup purposes, have I compromised the quality of the jpegs?

** If I right-click on a jpeg, choose copy, then paste it in another folder, have I compromised the quality of the jpeg?

** If I open up a jpeg in video-editing software-X, then immediately cancel/ESC/exit the program, have I compromised the quality of the jpeg?

...and, lastly...

** If I open up a jpeg in video-editing software-X, make changes, but then exit without saving those changes, have I compromised the quality of the jpeg?

Sorry, but I don't yet work in RAW, and I would really like to know a definitive answer to these questions... :eusa_think:

I can help somewhat.  Just copying or backing up a jpg will not change the file or reduce quality.  Editing it can unless you select the highest quality setting to save the file.  The solution is to save the edited file under different file name from the original file.  An easy way to check if quality has been reduced is to compare the file size, using for example Windows Explorer, to the original file.  If the file size has changed, i.e. is smaller, then the quality has been reduced.  I'll leave the rest to others.

I agree, copying or backing up doesn't affect jpegs, nor does exiting an edit without saving, but.... anytime you edit a jpeg and then save it, even as a different file name you get jpeg artifacts. Will they be noticeable? depends on the resolution of the image, but most times until they've been stepped on a lot of times you won't see the artifacts at normal viewing sizes, zooming in is another story.
