Title: Bob Bullock Texas History Museum
Post by: Casa Grande on April 22, 2016, 02:53:34 PM
Although honorable, there is something disheartening about being presented in a museum on your 45th birthday.

I've been keeping this somewhat of a secret the last few months because I wanted to see the end result.  But, what an honor it was to be invited to be a part of the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum's exhibit of Big Bend National Park honoring the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service.

The exhibit (from left to right) consists of an enclosed glass case with my Yashica-A twin lens (6x6) medium format camera I took on my first trip, my old vanity license plate, a koozie I made for Sarah and I's wedding guests on October 7, 2006, and a Backcountry Roads of Big Bend National Park tour guide book I purchased on a 1993 trip I took.

In the middle is a five foot wide gliché print  I took of the Sierra Quemada on a very special trip with Zane Thomas and Shea Thomas back in 2005.

And then we have my little profile plaque with an audio excerpt from my interview with the museum in February essentially talking about the inspiration for this picture.

I'm one of several photographers, one of whom is our very own TJ Avery and other Big Bend lovers who have their works displayed and it is a real honor to be representing some amazingly talented Big Bend photographers of whom I don't feel worthy being displayed next to.

The exhibit starts today at the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum in Austin (next to the State Capitol Building) and ends Sept. 18th!  As soon as the museum posts the audio clip online, I'll share it with you. I hope you all can check it out!

Congratulations, David - on both your photos and exhibit in the musuem (what an honor!) as well as for this website you single-handedly brought to life.  You've probably saved the NPS a million dollars in ranger time at the front desk that otherwise would have been spent answering (and re-answering) visitors' questions.  Your website has more useful BBNP info than any resource out there.  Don't be disheartened.

Thanks guys. Yes, it is an honor and they were very nice and did a fantastic job with the exhibit.

TJ was there. He had several prints displayed. I spoke with Laurence Parent briefly and I spoke with Cindy Ott-Jones, BIBE Superintendent.  We had a pleasant conversation and I invited the Park Service to be an integral part of the Chat page. I expressed my feelings on this whole sour relationship and hoped we could become cordial like we used to.  I expressed my feeling at the importance of offering current, accurate information in all aspects of the park, but I had no intentions of censorship.  I felt like she was receptive as she suggested her new social media person, who hasn't officially been hired yet , could offer official NPS statements to discussions.  So, I don't know. I said what I wanted to say to her. I felt good about it and now the ball is in their court.  I do ask if they decide to participate we can maintain some civility. We can disagree without being asses about it (speaking of myself).

All in all, it was a good preview last night and I really enjoyed myself.  The museum did a great job representing our beloved park.

Well we will have to keep presidio and elhombre apprised of the situation  :icon_eek: but I do applaud you for having an open conversation with her, maybe it will help.  I have felt a bit of thawing of the relationship in the last year or so.

Congrats!  You should be honored for what you do, especially this web site.

Not only is this simply a place for people who love the area to share stories but it is the single most definitive place to gather information about Big Bend (and surrounding areas).  I don't think the park could maintain a site that has as much info as this site.  It can't be feasibly done.  This site does it because of the volunteers, the dozens of people who read it daily and answer questions and give opinions over and over.

I probably hit the BNP site once for every 9 or 10 times I check this site.  Usually to see the map to understand where someone is in their trip report.

Your site and your work, Casa Grande and all those other regulars are helping to preserve BB.  Using your site I can make the most out of my trips.  This makes for the best possible experience for me and my son.  This, in turn, puts some West Texas dust in our veins so to speak.  Although we're 8 hours away and only out there maybe once a year, we are suddenly concerned, we're advocates, we're fiercely protective of that big bend in the river.

Casa Grande,

I know you're likely a modest guy...but it is a big deal and you should be proud.  The picture is great, it's really neat hearing your interpretation of Big Bend and all the stories of the guys on here.

It's really cool reading all the responses when someone posts a trip report.  Most of you have probably walked that same trail numerous times but I can just imagine you hanging on every word and reliving that hike as you read some rookie's report on it.

I will be making my 3rd trip this fall (4th if you count when I was a small, small kid) and although I won't be going until it starts to cool a little bit (Nov?), I am already reading the reports, looking at pictures and starting to plan it in my mind.  I check this site daily!

To see one of you get your picture or story printed outside BBC is a big deal to me.  I'm glad you get the recognition and just think; someone that's never been out there might go because they saw that picture!

So while not on the same level, either in photo quality or in having my personal effects and stories told, I received word last week that one of my submissions was selected for the last installation from August 15 - September 18.  As a result, the wife and I are flying down from DC to Austin on August 20, since I'm fairly certain I'll never have anything I've done displayed in a museum again.  Can't wait to see everyone's work in person.

Here's mine.
Title: "No Boundaries"
Year taken: January 2016
Photographer: Andrew Newton
Photographer location: Alexandria, Virginia
Photograph description: Big Bend National Park is home to many boundaries, some man-made, some created by nature, and others drawn by treaty. The beauty and uniqueness of Big Bend is in how these boundaries have been and continue to be crossed.

As always, a big thank you to this community, which I like to think I've at least become a limited contributor to since my first trip in January 2015. It's such a refreshing respite from much of the other ridiculousness online.  The information here has been immensely helpful in helping me plan from afar some life-affirming trips with great friends.  I check in daily and have tried to make limited contributions where I can to pay it forward.

On a side note, I also happened to book my third trip for January 2017 last week as well. I'm already counting the days.

So we returned from Austin last night.  The museum seemed great actually, and I liked that the Big Bend exhibit was around the rotunda on the third floor.  The only problem with that layout on Saturday when we were there was that one of the programs at UT required their freshman to pick up their check-in packets in the large room on the third floor.  So there were thousands of students and their parents wrapped around the rotunda in line, so we weren't really able to see anything, aside from thousands of people actively ignoring the exhibit.  It was honestly hilariously humbling, except that I wanted to see things.

We finally asked some people standing in front of it to move so we could see it and made them snap some quick cell phone pictures of us.  I'm glad I went because I will likely never see my name in a museum again, and the exhibit seemed to be well presented, but for the orientation event on the only day I was able to see it.

Congratulations and thanks to everyone for sharing their stories.  It was nice to be able to point out to my wife that these are the people I've connected with online.  Some good things do happen on the internet after all.

Here are a few embarrassing photos of us taking it in.
