Title: New look?
Post by: aggiehiker on November 19, 2008, 09:06:15 PM
Is there a new look to the chat board or is it my computer? My bookmark for this chat is now the home page of BB Chat. The chat rooms are all different and hard to read.

Speaking of the new look.  Am I the only one that can just barely see Recent Posts and Forum Stats?  The text font is almost the same color as the background.  It's tough!

No problems here...glad we're wider than we were yesterday...that was a little different.

Not sure yet about the text being centered instead of justifed left...or is that just my PC??

That's interesting.  I have the same problem with IE as with Firefox.  The font is only a slightly darker "grey" that the background.  Almost illegible.

Remember, you can always format your text using the center tag (click the (http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/Themes/default/images/bbc/center.gif) button after previewing your post).

And if that's not right, try the (http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/Themes/default/images/bbc/right.gif)

I prefer for everything to default to left-justifed and otherwise unformatted. If someone wants to get fancy, they can go nuts with the formatting tools.

And is anyone else having problems with the Preview feature? It seems to say "Fetching preview..." for a really long time....sometimes forever.

I haven't had the posting problem . . . until I tried it just now.  Here's a screen shot of the font color problem I'm having.

ay ya-e ya-e.....

Ok, once again, still a work in progress....however, some of you may be having a cache issue.  Your 'puter is using the old stylesheet from your cache....clear your cache, restart your browser and the browser will be forced to use the new stylesheet from the server.

Yes, the "Info Center" at the bottom of the forum page still needs to be changed. I am aware of this.

Give it some time guys....I can see too...I can only do so much at a time. When I am finished I will let you know, only then, we'll deal with whatever issues you may be having.  I'm not finished yet!

Regarding the 'preview' issue, I think I know what is going on.....I'll see if I can fix it today.

Oh demanding crowds!!!...PLEASE let the administrator heath his sword, :icon_lol: :icon_lol:...All will be well, as he has always come thru before, :rolling: lighten up,folks.

In the meantime, let me deviate your ATENTION to some pics from Gilberto Sanchez,on this section (http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/serranias-del-burro-del-carmens-el-carmen/nov08sierra-del-carmenpuerto-rico-mineboquillas-del-carmen-and-the-tunnel-t6716.0.html;msg67022). Care to step this way, please?

Keep at it Dave, all is well Bro.

Not to put a pebble in your shoe, but while i was writting this post i tried the "Preview" feature?, it did not load up.I had to save it first then come back to modify some typos..just an observation.

Understood about choosing how my post is seen Richard. My "problem" is that all posts I read are centered. Is there a way to change that?

Not a real problem CG! Don't sweat it!! Just curious.
Thanks!

Thank you, I'm glad you like it.  I'm trying to fix a couple of issues:

1. Preview is not working.
2. The Page Links and "previous and next" links are not visible at the top and bottom of the pages. (As well as the moderator link)

Other than that, we should be good to go.  If there are any comments at this point I am open to your opinions and observations. Further, if you think there are any bits of information that you think should be visible on the home page, let me know.  Currently, I have the Alpine Gas Prices (for some reason isn't posting right now.), Big Bend Weather, Doppler Radar, Big Bend in the News and the Basin Webcam.

I'll be adding other links at the top of the page as we proceed.

thanks for your patience in the transition!

David

2. The Page Links and "previous and next" links are not visible at the top and bottom of the pages.

this feature has been fixed.

There still seems to be an issue. On Homero's recent trip thread there presently are three pages...
http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/serranias-del-burro-del-carmens-el-carmen/nov08sierra-del-carmenpuerto-rico-mineboquillas-del-carmen-and-the-tunnel-t6716.0.html;prev_next,next#new (http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/serranias-del-burro-del-carmens-el-carmen/nov08sierra-del-carmenpuerto-rico-mineboquillas-del-carmen-and-the-tunnel-t6716.0.html;prev_next,next#new)

Clicking on the individual page numbers navigates correctly; 'next' does not seem to work at all; and 'previous goes back to page one (even from page 3, without stopping at 2).

Also, in the user 'profile' area 'show posts' will only display the first page, regardless of any other clicked on. The same issue affects viewing other members when clicking 'show the last posts of this person'.

no, the website is designed for the avg computer screen. Not all screens can see wide images, so there has to be a line drawn somewhere.  Also, Golden Eagle subscribers get a wider view of the threads since they do not see ads.  Unfortunately, it is an impossible task to make everyone see the same because of the variety of monitors on the market.

ok, as a workaround to this problem, I have modified the board to automatically resize any image that is embedded into a post so as to eliminate the horizontal scroll bars.  To see the original, full size image, you simply click on the bar above the image.  Hope this helps.

Hey David.  First off, you do a fantastic job around here, so I hope this doesn't come across as niggling...

but...

now when I click on the bar at the top of a pic to see the full size, a horizontal scroll bar appears at the bottom of all the pics in that post, which will often entail several clicks down the page to grab the scroll bar, which then can't be manipulated while simultaneously looking at the pic in question (which is several clicks way back up the page).  Does my description make any sense?

Anyway, it would certainly be nice to access a larger rez in an easier fashion.  Seems that we used to be able to do this, either as a pop-up in another window or maybe some other method I'm forgetting about...

Anyway, having said all that...I'll now donate for the 1st time in a while & shut my trap!   :icon_biggrin:

Also, in the user 'profile' area 'show posts' will only display the first page, regardless of any other clicked on. The same issue affects viewing other members when clicking 'show the last posts of this person'.

Try this as a workaround (using my own profile as an example)...

Here's what I see when I go to "Show Posts":

http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/profiles/trtlrock-u316.html;sa,showPosts (http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/profiles/trtlrock-u316.html;sa,showPosts)

To see Page-2, add "; start=15" to the end like this:

http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/profiles/trtlrock-u316.html;sa,showPosts;start=15 (http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/profiles/trtlrock-u316.html;sa,showPosts;start=15)

Now you're on page-2. To get to the page-3, change the 15 to 30, etc.

hm,  good question...I'm not sure this will be available this year....I would even love it to be able to allow you to change to your own colors...the problem is, when I have to add cool tools to the site, make modifications to certain files, I would have to do it to more than just one file....make sense?

Anyway, it is possible to change colors for spring, summer, winter etc....but don't hold your breath  :icon_wink:

For Ay Chi's latest trip report post (http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/index.php/topic,7081.msg67740.html#msg67740), I see about six pages worth of blank space after his last image and before the "Last edit: ... by RichardM" line. My guess is it's allocating the height of the post based on the unresized image heights.

I'm in a training class as opposed to using my regular PCs. I've got IE 6.0 here and Netscape 8.1 (don't ask...I have no idea why the sysadmin chose those two). Both browsers add the extra space, only Netscape really has problems with it and gets confused. I'll check it from my work and home PCs later today.

I've seen this on IE 6.0 and 7.0

For Ay Chi's latest trip report post (http://www.bigbendchat.com/portal/forum/index.php/topic,7081.msg67740.html#msg67740), I see about six pages worth of blank space after his last image and before the "Last edit: ... by RichardM" line. My guess is it's allocating the height of the post based on the unresized image heights.

I installed FireFox here and it works fine. Appears to only be an issue with the older IE/Netscape versions.

On my work PC running IE 7.0 it shows about 2.5 pages of blank space.

Richardm,

I think you are correct that it is related to the photo resizing. That is when it started.

FYI here's what I see for "the most popular topic in the last 24 hours" this morning:

Sorry, it's a locked board, you can't read this topic

I'm logged in, so don't quite understand why I would be seeing this...

no big deal, just FYI

Probably just a database glitch where it referred to a post in the old Politics forum or something.

"Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!"

Another reminder on how to avoid having lots of   tags showing up in your posts: AVOID HAVING TWO SPACES BETWEEN WORDS, SENTENCES, ETC. The board's software has trouble parsing extra spaces and often replaces one of the spaces with  , which clutters up your post and annoys the Moderator. :icon_rolleyes:

I can't preview my posts since the new look arrived. I've tried the alt+p on different computers
and I either get a drop down menu unrelated to the board or I get nothing at all. I never get it right the first time so all my posts will have edits from now on unless you bring back the preview button. Or...if someone can help me determine what I'm doing wrong. :crossedfingers:

It's not just you, if that helps.

Well, I guess it helps my ego.

It's going to make my first ever trip report a little slow and messy. It was most likely going to be that way any way, but now I have an excuse.

sorry, FM....since I've changed the look, the preview button has not worked.  I know what the problem is, I just haven't had the chance or thought to fix it.   I'll see if I can get on it this week!

thanks, for reminding me....
