Possible Features? Requests for Features?
« on: November 21, 2008, 11:56:11 AM »
I've been thinking of adding a few features to the board:

1. Trading system.  Kind of like ebay only you can trade, give away, sell, etc.  Or maybe a "Craigslist" type of system.
2. BBC Store integrated into the site.
3. A Links page to Big Bend sites.

thinking of more stuff.....

what would you guys like to see?

It would take some time and effort by lots of us regulars (and I volunteer, btw), but I would love to see us take the best, most informative threads/posts and build a "Visiting Big Bend: Advice from Benders"-type guide.

I can see two levels of the guide. One for basic information, first-time visitors, or casual visitors (the ones who don't backpack beyond the major trails or ever leave their cars). The other for more expert information, such as OML, off-trail stuff, etc.

So, for example, here is some threads I pulled together for the Outer Mountain Loop.

Thinking of hiking the Outer Mountain Loop?
Trail description (NPS)

Trip reports from:
bdhawk133 (Oct 08)
Casa Grande (Jan 08)
JurisFrog (Feb 07)
Lighter Fluid (Nov 06)

Questions, suggestions, and advice:
Possible itinerary with advice
Another possible itinerary with advice
And another ...
More advice on a possible itinerary
And some more on another possible itinerary
Questions about water
More water questions
Questions about elevation
Dodson Trail questions

Other resources:
Custom topo maps (in the Comments section)

I had mentioned (to "oh great Moderator art thou") that trip reports to other parks (I know, I know) get lost in the "Other Stuff" section, and really don't belong in the regular section for Big Bend either, so the Moderator (sans Tilley hat) said "are you going to volunteer to collect all of those misplaced trip reports? Well, I HAPPILY  :icon_wink: volunteered and have started to gather, but I've been sick lately and am now just recovering.

Sooooooo, I guess what I'm proposing is an area for "Other Parks Trip Reports", that can even be broken down into National & State, if we wanna get really anal & nitpicky? (and don't forget a BLM section for you know who)   :eusa_whistle:  :eusa_dance:
There's got to be something better than

Jeff,

Yes!  I have been meaning to do that for some time now....let's start compiling this information and get it organized.  We'll make an FAQ section.

Musey,
Yes, we'll do this too.  Richard had mentioned you mentioning to him but I just have yet to mention it until now that you have mentioned it here.

I think the trading system idea is good one.  Maybe a "BBC For Sale", something like that.
WATER, It does a body good.

Now that you mention it, I can create new forum boards...and so I did.

And, yeah, some of the topics I moved over aren't technically "trip reports", but I felt they were close enough, or contained info that people would look for in that forum, or it just cracked me up a little bit to move them there.

I open the BBC site with the unread posts window.  Would it be EASY to add the ability to mark individual items as read so as to allow me to leave only the items I want to open?  This is not worth a lot of bother in my opinion but is available in some forums.  I love the new format.  Thank you David.

Trip reports gathered in a "per location" would be nice.

I have been thinking on this and some combination of approaches would be good to make it easier for folks to find commonly asked questions. The use of some permanent threads at the head of each board with Jeff's type of grouping of links to other threads might work well too. So when you went to the Hiking the Desert board, for example, there would be a permanent thread on say the Sierra Quemada. The hard part is deciding which threads and links to include (it could be like the photo contests where we all nominate the ones we think have the best info). Hmmm? :eusa_think:

Oops.....comment stricken with :icon_redface: embarrassment  :eusa_doh: for not looking in the other forum first.

It would be great to somehow have a current springs and water report page, board or some feature like that. It used to be that the rangers kept a spring report book that you could look at to help plan trips but they don't keep it anymore. People would report back in after a trip and let them know if and how strong a spring was running and then the date was entered so you would know how old the report was. It is a great help when planning a trip.
