Here's a suggestion:  How about adding that menu bar with Home / Forum / Help, etc at the *bottom* of a posting thread as well?  That way I can quickly go back to the home page and scan for new posts without scrolling all the way back to the top of the web page?

Just for the record I have not had any connectivity or slow erratic problems. I logged off and tried as a guest with ads, and it might have been slower but not by much. I'm still running IE7 (I hear there are still some weird software conflict problems with IE8), Window XP Media Center Edition SP3, and DSL that recently tested at 1289kps.

"In the beginning" :icon_wink: .... I've been on the board since December of 2005 when it all began. A handfull of us STARVING for any other knowledge on Big Bend and kindred spirits to share it with.

WOW, how this place has grown in every way imaginable! I'm sure a few of us originals have evolved a bit too..  :high5:

Umm.. the only thing I miss is the "preview before posting" feature, but I've learned to live without that too. Adaptation is a learned specialty.

All in all a great place to start my day with and cherished friends & family made from it!  :eusa_clap:
There's got to be something better than

I've got one machine (out of 7) that does not play well with IE 8.  This site is one of several that loads slowly and usually with errors (and don't even think about opening another window).  Sometimes the only answer is to reboot.  Not sure what the problem is, not even my computer guy understands it, but he's been finding the same thing on a few other machines he services.  Not a problem with RAM, that much we know.  May be a problem with add ons/plug ins.  I've downloaded FireFox for that machine, and it works fine.

Overall, the biggest problem I've got is I haven't been able to spend any real time in the park the last 2+ years :icon_cry: so I don't have as much to contribut as I'd like.

Yeah, I'd like the preview button to work, maybe a direct link to the park's site, but that's small stuff.  You guys have "done good" keeping this place up-to-date.

re: Politics.  Recently, this site was being abused, and dominated, by a few members - most of whom were deliberately trying to provoke confrontations.  Most of whom rarely, if ever, posted anything like trip reports, etc.  There's plenty of sites on the web for political junkies.  Thanks for toning it down, VG.

Thank you Roy, I completely agree. If you look at the boards statistics the most folks online dropped in half from Oct. 2008 to Nov. 2008, while the number of page views stayed about the same. Now there are alot of things that could contribute to this including the price of gas to get to BB, the economy tanked about then and it was just after East Texas got slammed by hurricanes, distracting people from fantasying about going to a distant place like BB. It was also about then that we had way too many threads about politics and guns and I had the feeling the board was dying. If I was someone new wanting to contribute something about the area and the park I would have seen all that and said, "not the site for me".  :pissed:

Thank you for recovering it and keeping it a place for great info on Big Bend, if we can just get more folks to play and contribute information it would be even better.  :eusa_clap:

There are two things that I am concerned with based on your posts:

1. Page Load.
2. The weird typing thing.

For me, the page seems to load just fine, all be it, fairly slow sometimes, it does load depending on network traffic.  I have a fairly fast connection, but I agree the page needs to be optimized for better load times.

I have finally seen this typing problem in posts.  It has never happened to me, therefore I had no idea it was a problem until now.  I never use Internet Destroyer, so I didn't know about it....I'll have to see if there is a fix for it.  Anyone else having these two problems?

Yes, i have had the same two problems when logging in. However, some how part of the loading up problems have diminished since i started using Google Chrome as my navigator. All things considered, the page is very good and has grown in many ways possible, always striving to present new features and reviewing new tools and gadgets.

An excellent choice for checking in to see what is new in the desert cyber world. My vote is not cast for a "new" politics section, THIS IS NOT the site for those issues.

 Excellent work gentlemen...Bravo!! :eusa_clap:
Stay thirsty, my friends.

VG, if it helps any, that machine I'm talking about does somtimves lock up when loading BBChat, and always at the same place.  I get the frames and some of the ads, but it freezes with "Advertisement" in the brown bar;  never gets to the point where it says "Live Big Bend Chat".  And the areas where chat dialog/threads should appear are blank.  I've tried refreshing from there;  never works.

Nix on a politics section!!!!

I hesitate to comment because I like this site so well already.

I would like to see groupings based on length of hike; e.g., "Overnight Hikes"; "Two Nighetrs"; "Three Nighters", etc.   I realize that some people hike in two days what others do in one or three.  And someone would have to go back and count the nights as posted in earlier trip reports.  So this is probably not very realistic.

Wake me when it's time to go.

Roy,  can you do me a favor?  When it happens again, check the source code that is loaded copy the entire code and post it here or PM it to me. Be Sure to use the "Insert Code" button at the top of the post window (this would be the button ).   It will help me figure out what is hanging up.

to check source code for explorer: click "view" then "source"
it should open in notepad or some other text program.  Select all, copy and paste.

thanks,
david

Did I mention a spell checker?.... :icon_rolleyes: :rolling:

if you use internet explorer there is a handy add on called iespell
http://www.iespell.com/

I have been using it for about a year and it works well. it underlines the mis spelled words in red as you complete the word, gives you the option to add odd words to the dictionary, very similar to the spell checker in MS Word or outlook

That's the "View Source" under "Page" in IE8, right?  I still don't know where all this stuff is these days.

Whoa, the dialog box keeps jumping back to the end of your message.  First time I've seen this;  keep having to drag the slider back down so I can see what I've typed.  And this is not the machine I've been talking about;  this one's relatively new, runs Vista Home Premium.

Sounds it might be a Vista bug. I haven't seen anything remotely like that problem on either XP Home or Pro and IE7&8 plus Firefox.
