Henry U.S. Survival Rifle...
« on: August 04, 2008, 03:39:19 PM »
I enjoy heading out into areas where I can legally carry a weapon in order to hunt/fish/protect myself. Long ago, my Dad gave me an AR-7 Explorer which had originally been designed for military pilots as a survival rifle in the event that they were shot down. Eventually the original company that built this rifle (Armalite) stopped production, and it was picked back up by Charter Arms. Later, Charter ceased production, and now Henry RAC currently makes this gun. Somewhere between moves, I somehow lost that original survival rifle. So, I finally decided to buy another.

I love this thing!! It is only 16 inches long when stowed within the stock of the gun, and can be put together in a matter of seconds to form a 35 inch semi-automatic LR .22 rifle. At only 2.5 lbs, it's weight is hardly a burden at all, and it easily fits into my backpack with all of my other things. Accuracy is amazing, and it comes with two 8 round clips. All pieces fit comfortably within the stock, and it actually floats in water when sealed. All things considered, this gun is exceptional. As long as it is legal for me to carry, you can bet it will be with me.

gunbroker.com (the ebay for guns, since ebay itself is far too liberal and a self-appointed decider of what is legal to sell, to allow such sales) has a NIB Henry for a buy it now price of $175.

And, for those that will find such an auction site offensive, licensed gun dealers must complete the transaction so it is no different than buying a gun in a gun store and not like buying person-to-person (horrors!) at a gun show without the government diddling in your affairs. I picked up a very nice Rossi Coach shotgun that way...12 ga., side-by-side double barrel with exposed hammers. The same gun you will see in most westerns that feature a short-barrel shotgun, and the one John Wayne typically used. With a steel buttplate that baby kicks but, hey, you can't 'ride shotgun' with anything else.

A double gun doesn't quite have the capacity or speed of an extended magazine semi-auto Benelli (break 10 hand-thrown clays in 2.2 seconds), but it has its own charm.

You'd be surprised at what you can accomplish when you have to and you accept the situation you are in. It's what separates the survivors from the victims.

Pretty hard to make a .22 rifle that isn't.

Of course I can.....without a pole, and with no time to improvise with some sort of invention, I have shot a dinner or two from a clear and shallow river before. Just need to get your physics correct so that you get the fish, and not some poor standerby (person, animal, plant) from a ricochet.

I suppose you mean the video? The Benelli cycles so fast (a result of its superior design and elimination of traditional gas tubes and pistons...the entire operating system is inertial and contained in the bolt) that 5 or 6 shots can easily be fired before the first hull hits the ground. There is no finer shotgun from an operational/durability perspective.
