Everyday Car Campers = Oshmans/Sports Authority.
Serious Campers/Backpackers = REI, Campmor.
People with lots of money = Whole Earth Provision Co.
(ok, they have stuff for regular guys, but I've never gotten a "deal" there.)
Hunters/Fishermen = Bass Pro Shop, Gander Mountain, Cabelas.

Sounds about right.  Looking at their website, I'd guess that Sportsman's Warehouse will fall into the latter category.

Sierra Trading Post will occasionally have some good stuff at cheap prices.  They do lots of discontinued and closeout stuff, so read the fine print.

Come to think of it, the last thing I bought at Whole Earth was my Vasque hiking boots...

So did you hike them to death or did they just fall apart prematurely?

As for magazines:
Backpacker = people who do it.
Outside = people who like to think about it.

I guess that depends on your definition of premature.  I bought them about 10-12 years ago and the tread and uppers were still in good shape, so I don't think I wore them out.  I'd say it was more the years than the mileage.  They just don't make rubber like they used to.  Maybe it was the Andromeda Strain...

Yeah we've given Good Sports alot of $ too. Very close to me but you pay full price as well.....spend gas $, or pay full price? LOL....They have a pretty good selection for a small place. We just need to get a few essentials for this trip. No big $ purchases. I think Randell summed up the stores pretty well! :D

Well we went to Sportsman's Warehouse yesterday and I was just a tad dissapointed. I wasn't expecting a whole lot anyway. Mostly hunting and fishing. But for once I will say that they had more men's clothing (like 4 times) than women's. Unusual. We picked up some fuel, gloves, socks...etc. But still not a good selection. Oh I almost bought the "Kill Em & Grill Em" book by Ted Nugent and his silicone wife.....No, not really

Let me guess, you have the DVD of this and like to watch the jet streaking over Shafter - or at least I do.

I've got the same brand of boots from REI, different model, and really like them.  I'm on my 2nd pair - get about 4 years out of a pair, but I wear them everyday to work and to hike in.  Hey, you never know when I'm at work that someone might want to go hiking - so I'm always at the ready...  I'd say that 10-12 years for a pair of boots is a good ROI.

Here, in the Minneapolis area, it's REI or Midwest Mountaineering for quality equipment.  And, I want/like quality equipment I can rely on.  I spend more money at these stores, but it pays to do so in the long run : )

Oh, I have to concur 103% with that.  There is little room for equipment failure out in the middle of no where.  I blew out a pair of cheap Academy boots on the side of OSO peak one time.  Was not fun making my way down.  Didn't have a spare set.  Just tennis shoes.  Tried fixing the boots with duct tape, NOT. (contrary to popular belief, duct tape can not heal/fix all   ) Tried buying some more boots around Presidio, Lajitias, etc. (before Lajitias becomae a social spot again).  NOT.  Had to make do with tennis shoes for the rest of the trip.  Learned long ago to not skimp on things that make you comfortable or warm.  Not many things worse than being in a flimsy tent in a cold sleeping bag on a miserable night - learned that at EROCK in a ice storm.

Yeah, I learned the hard way too.  Cheap equipment just doesn't cut it.  You can buy cheaper equipment four or five times over or just get some good stuff and get set for a while.

I recently had a hole in my sleeping pad that I got from REI about six years ago.  I went in to get a patch and REI said I could just bring in my old sleeping pad and they would give me credit towards a new one.

I didn't take them up on it because I like my well-used sleeping pad.  I just got the patch and it has worked great every since.

Nice to know I can just take it in and get credit towards a new one, though.  You don't get that kind of service at most stores.

i've just skimmed through this thread and just to throw in my two cents real quick....if you're going to go to Cabelas (and I  know you will want to at least once) you might as well go to the coleman outlet in san marcos.  i love coleman products...reasonable, fairly well made and lots of great stuff to get ;) be careful with the use of the word "outlet" though....it's not a regulated word, if you know what i mean ;)
