Title: Any Hennessy owners out there?
Post by: bdhawk133 on March 04, 2008, 03:04:46 PM
Hey all... I just ordered a Hennessy Expedition, and while I anxiously await its arrival :icon_biggrin:, I was looking for some feedback from fellow benders who may have used it in BIBE.

I've never drank Cognac out in Big Bend, but I'm not much of a Cognac drinker anyway.  I'd think it would taste better out there than at home though - most things are that way out that way.  I've never heard of the expedition brand though - is it some special reserve or private label?

I've never used one, but did look into the Hennessy Hammock as an alternative to a tent.  Came to the conclusion it was not suited for the places I go...like Big Bend.  Down on the desert floor you're hard pressed to find two trees to hang it.  Up on the mountain it often gets too cold to sleep in a hammock without insulation underneath you.

I have the same question.  Where can you use a hammock in Big Bend except a few sites in the high Chisos?

I've used Hennessy Hammock in the Chisos.  I liked it much.  I found it very comfortable to sleep in, and light to pack.   The temps were on the chilly side.  I've read of ways to deal with that, one being a windshield reflector used as a thermal block.  Inflatables and closed cell don't have the give to work in a hammock. Only in the Chisos, though, for Big Bend.  Mine gets used in the Hill Country when the wife and dog don't come along.

Well, if you take along 2 big poles and a large hammer to drive them in the ground, or 6 big poles that you cobble into 2 tripods.....

Alternatively, if you stretch the rope REALLY tight between 2 towing hitches you will just barely clear the ground. That's best done by moving one vehicle to set the tension just a hair below the snap point you won't be so far off the ground that you will get hurt when it all lets go at 2 am.

I have to say.... there is no lack of humor among the desert dwellers :icon_lol:! The Hennessy arrived today shortly after I posted the first entry. And of course, I "tested" it for about an hour in the backyard. We are headed out to BIBE in a couple of weeks, and I am definitely going to give hangin in the desert a shot (provided I can find a hangin spot)!! I will let you guys no how it fairs when we get back! Thanks for the input guys!!

Hammock folds into an open air lounger/chair or can be used on the ground as a tent when paired with your hiking poles

An alternative use (since you won't find 2 tree's the right distance apart anyway) would be to use it as a throw net to capture live animals -perhaps even a feeding mtn lion.  Somehow I think this item is destined to become the latest addition of things you took to the Park and never used.  But don't feel bad - I have a can of beans that has been on the Dodson Trail twice and is probably so old at this point that it is unfit to eat anyway.  I think the cognac Hennessy would probably have been a better idea but I don't like the idea of being rolled up in a hammock in lion country at night anyway..TWWG

I have a Hennesey I'm trying to get used to. By putting a pad under myself, it stays warmer at night. Naps are great in it especially if it's windy and you don't tie it down. Like John Anderson sang, "just a swangin". I sleep on my side a lot and just can't get used to it. Watch out for the cacti as you fall out.
