Looks a lot like a kingfisher, maybe common or belted juvenile. Great pic. Thanks

You got the Kingfisher part correct....but there are 3 species in the US, and this is not a Belted or a juvenile......

Green Kingfisher...never seen one in the Big Bend.  :( But I have seen this fellow twice... this is the more recent photograph.  8)

Yes, a green.

Did you see the Least in B.B.? We get occasional Least Grebes on the coast near here (Hou) and I have seen many in deep STX-RGV

Here's a Least Grebe with a big dragonfly. Brazoria if I remember correctly

Yes, that one was in the irrigation pond near the trail to Hot Springs in January 2016. Here's  another from the RGV nature trail, a decade earlier.

OK, as usual I have more questions than answers - here's a couple I'm not sure of. The first is maybe a juvenile Grebe, Pied-billed maybe ? The second is a vireo of some type (I think). Both at BBNP.

It appears to be a pied billed grebe. The least has a thin bill and an yellow/orange eye.

I believe the 2nd pic is a Ruby Crowned Kinglet,

...looking at the photo again this morning on a bigger screen -  the black bar behind the white wing bar almost looks like an artifact or shadow. If it is truly a black bar - I'll stick with Ruby Crowned Kinglet.

If it is a shadow or an artifact - Then Hutton's Vireo

Somehow I had vireo on the mind  but you are right - that is a ruby-crowned kinglet , the beak clinches it for me. I guess that has to be a Pied-billed as it has no yellow eye - maybe the angle of the pic is such that you can't see the ring on the beak, or maybe it hasn't developed yet on that bird ?

Non breeding or juvenile pied billed grebes show very little if any ring on the bill
