Blister treatment
« on: January 06, 2009, 06:55:59 PM »
All of the mentions of moleskin in other topics got me wondering how many people use moleskin as it's designed to be used as opposed to just slapping it over the blister.

See http://www.outdoor.com/skills/backpacking-skills/moleskin-a-hikers-friend/
and http://www.ehow.com/how_117997_deal-with-blister.html
for the basics.

Personally I've never used it and have relied on band-aids after it was too late and duct tape once when the hot spot first developed.

Discuss.

I used moleskins while in the army on those long road marches we used to do.  Still got blisters. Now I just use duct tape and band-aids. Haven't ever had a problem with these remedies.
What would you do with a blister this big?????

I started putting mole skin on my heals and around the big toe on my right foot before I head out for the day. I always carry some extra with me. And I have not had a blister as a result of this method. I did start making the patch a little larger so it stays put better.

I have never tried duct tape, but I guess that would be a little easier to keep handy or find just about anywhere.

I always carry Vasoline when I hike or cross country ski to apply to hot spots.  If you get to the hot spot early enough you can avoid applying a ring of mole skin around the blister.  Just for general first aid, I always carry a band aid in my wallet.  I learned this as a way to avoid admitting patients during sick call while a medic in the Air Force.  Handing out a band aid saved on a lot of paper work as an admission means a chart.  Forty years after my discharge I still use band aids..like band aids in all cases.

I hear that Windex will fix anything.
If you climb mountains, no explanation is necessary, if you don't , no explanation is possible.

I recently used some moleskin during some recent hiking at Big Bend Ranch State Park. I used it the proper way by cutting out a hole for the blister and it worked great. It was on the toe next to my little toe.  I was surprised that it stayed on and in place for about three days, until I took it off, much longer than a band aid would.
