BLM/NFS Dispersed Camping
« on: March 08, 2018, 05:40:12 PM »
So I talked my daughter into a fandango out to Grand Canyon over spring break. We'll be winging it and might camp in the NFS south of the park. My question is it generally ok to leave your tent set up while off driving around during the day? There is a fire road just south of the Ten-X campground (closed for the winter) where the park rangers usually send people desperate for a campsite. I only have an old Eureka Alpine Meadows 4 tent, which is  pain to set up. Not to mention the air mattress.

Update: We ended up spending only one night "dispersed" and didn't have to leave the tent set up during the day.

USFS/BLM is very unlike the NPS,

You pretty much can do whatever you want.

I suspect you'll be fine. I've spent many, many nights camping on BLM/NFS land without incident. But a cautionary note: several years ago I was doing a bio-survey in the Lincoln National Forest and returned to my campsite one evening as the sun was going down, only to find every single thing gone. My campsite - a few miles from a fire road - was ringed by the tracks of a 4-wheeled ATV. They took everything: a couple thousand dollars worth of stuff. All I had was my emergency bivouac gear carried in my fanny pack. I spent a darned cold night out there before hiking out to my vehicle the next day.
