Brewing Coffee while camping??
« on: April 26, 2009, 08:18:32 PM »
I am, unfortunately addicted to coffee.  In as much as I try to kick the habit, I have failed thus far.  I suppose one must have a vice or two...

Given that, what and how do you brew up a cup of coffee while camping or backpacking?  Any and all advice will be much appreciated.

Folger's singles :icon_biggrin:

I'm with you BBH, it's just not morning without a cup of java.  When I heat water to rehydrate food, there is usually just enough left for a cup of tea or coffee. Here is a good source for several different brands and types of coffee singles.

About the only vice I have left. Just not willing to live without it. I buy green beans and roast them myself. When truck camping, I have a power pack (battery and inverter) to run the grinder and use a single cup drip arrangement. Less cleanup than a press and the coffee has more body. When backpacking, I prepare fresh ground in t-sac filters (google it), a cup per and I use the #2 size. Then I put the individual t-sacs in a valve bag. A bit of extra work, but worth it, IMHO. Tried all of the instants, single bags, etc, and just not the same. Actually, wish I could break the habit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That t-pac filter looks like a great option when hiking vs. the Melita cone and filter.  I really like a french press cup when truck camping.  Just boil water, pour it in the cup with the grounds, put the lid on and press it three or four minutes later.  REI has one that makes two nice full regular cups of coffee per batch.  Just pour from the french press cup into a regular cup and BOOM, you're ready to go.

I have one I bought from Academy a few years ago that I use most weekdays to make my morning's coffee instead of a coffee maker.  Works like a champ.  I actually prefer it to some of the fancy glass presses I have.

I either use the Folger's coffee singles, or fill up a small ziploc bag with some General Foods International coffee mix.  It ain't as good as freshly ground beans at home, but it's convenient and pretty good while on the trail.

This was posted in a similar thread a while back but here it is: Here you go Cowboy Coffee Boil water in pot, put coffee grounds (small handful) into each sock, drop sock with coffee grounds into boiling water, makes coffee and washes socks at same time duality of purpose, camp lite etc.  :rolling: :rolling:

you can generally get two cups out of a Folgers single.  Thus, to get my daily requirement of a pot of coffee - four Folgers singles per day.

I've been using the Folgers singles lately while backpacking, they produce a mediocre cup of coffee, but better than instant.  I have the press attachment for my Jetboil, which works well, but is messy to clean up and wastes water.

For truck camping, I pretty much always use a French press.

There's always this - http://www.rei.com/product/736980

WATER, It does a body good.

French press is the way to go in my book as I can't stomach instant coffee.  I've got one about the size of a regular plastic mug that doesn't take up too much space and I figure if I've got water going on for food, might as well take five minutes for good coffee that has flavor...

A hippie cousin to cowboy coffee - I always like to use fresh ground beans (packed in, unless you have alot of time in which case you can use an old hand grinder), either a clean sock or t-shirt, and a leftover plastic 1 liter or smaller bottle with the bottom cut off. Insert shirt or sock in bottle with small end in your cup or thermos, fill with coffee, pour hot water slowly and voila - drip coffee. Less to clean than the French press, less to carry, plus you can fill everyone's cup individually and then drip a thermos full for later if you want...
