Cross Timbers Hiking Trail on Lake Texoma?
« on: February 01, 2007, 04:49:58 PM »
I live about 30 minutes north of the Dallas Metroplex.  I am looking for a place nearby where I can leave work early a Friday, set up camp by dark, and have all day Saturday to explore before coming home Sunday morning.

I found Cross Timbers Hiking Trail, which is on Lake Texoma and about an hour's drive from my house.

Anybody familiar with it and able to provide suggestions on where to camp/ things to see - stuff I can't get from their website?

I'd go solo - so nothing that involves anything too dangerous.

Thanks.

I've never hiked that trail but I have done a little hiking at Eisenhower State Park.  It was ok for Texas but I like Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma a lot better.  You can combine it and Turner Falls for a nice weekend.  It will take you about an hour more to get to it so in the winter you'd be hard pressed to get there before dark but it is possible.  There is plenty of hiking there for a weekend.  Turner Falls is cheaper to visit in the winter and far less crowded and very close to the recreation area.

Its a decent hike for NTX.  Parts of it go through fishing camps (Paw Paw, and others) so its not like it is real remote or anything.  I caught enough fish for a couple of meals as the trail is adjacent to Lake Texoma most of the route.  There is a designated campsite about halfway in, if I recall correctly.  It would be pretty quiet this time of year.   The only hazards other than the lake for solo hiking is poison ivy by the bushel.  Check out Hagerman Wildlife Refuge for some good exploring and excellent birding.  Any of it beats TV and hanging out in the Metromess.

A nicer area, but with a less developed trail system is north of the border near Tishamingo, Ok at the Blue River.  They release trout there in the winter also.  The campground is a bit rough and its a public hunting area so know the season. The best hiking in that direction is the Wichita Mtns near Lawton.  Another good Ok option is Beaver's Bend and Broken Bow Lake about 2 hours NE of the Dallas area.
