Do People Still Backpack?
« on: April 13, 2010, 06:32:24 PM »
The rep from Patagonia was in my store today giving a training clinic and as he was discussing their technical apparel he said "you can use this to ski in, climb in, etc." I commented " also a great piece for backpacking". He replied, "oh, nobody really goes backpacking anymore".  :eusa_think:

Did I miss something or enter a parallel dimension without realizing it?  :icon_lol:

Not with stuff made by Patagonia, anyway.

Hmmm, maybe I should send them this photo from my backpacking trip last August in Colorado...in my Patagonia Jacket and pants.

I believe all of you have misspelled Patagucci.

Gosh, and I thought I was shameless . . .

Al

P.S. Perhaps shameless but a beautiful photo.  Thanks.

Why did the 'staying alive' song just pop in my head after reading this/looking at that photo?  :rolling:

Please, get it out!!!

I am by no means rediculing the photo.  It is just fine.  But the song ... must ... go!

I guess I must not be up to speed on coiture gear; I've never heard of Patagonia. And I guess that Patagonia rep has never ventured near the Grand Canyon or the AT. Plenty of backpackers there to refute his claim.

Guess about as high falutin' I get as far as clothing goes is Columbia gear from the local Academy Sports. :) I don't own any North Face gear, either.

I guess I must not fit their target demographic.

Yeah, it's expensive. The funny part about it is that the rep has been with the company for almost 30 years. I have a subscription to Backpacker mag and there are several ads for Patagonia, and they are usually recommended in gear choices for their down sweaters and other products too.  :eusa_doh:

I still backpack and hike.  I use down and wool, Tarptent, Montbell, Cascade, Inov-8, Icebreaker and Gossamer Gear among other companies.  Out of touch maybe?

Patagonia is becoming the new Eddie Bauer.  EB used to be actually functioning outdoor clothing.  Now it's "urban outdoor" clothing, if you consider walking across a mall parking lot outdoor.  Patagonia isn't that bad yet, but it's on it's way.  Patagucci is a good description, LOL!  I'll stick with my REI clothing.

Patagonia was a major player in outdoor gear several decades ago, but their slide towards becoming Patagucci began a long time ago. They probably still make some good stuff, but their marketing has definitely shifted.

I'd get it if he meant that more people ski than backpack, but climbing v. backpacking?   :eusa_think:  I think not.

Patagucci...that's funny.
