Impulse Buy - Sleeping Bag
« on: January 24, 2009, 09:11:52 AM »
Knowing I need a better insulated sleeping bag, I've been keeping an eye out for a bargain on a better bag. I ran across a North Face Blaze 3D 20 bag on the big auction site earlier this week so I kept an eye on it to see if there was much auction action, so to speak. Last night I put in a modest bid and went to bed. When I awoke this morning I found that I had won the auction. I know that this bag is not a really a high tech super duper sleeping system but I figure it might do the job for my one night backpacking trips. I'm not camping in winter but my other bag barely keeps me warm in 40-50 degree weather, even in a tent. I'm hoping the Blaze will be a little warmer...should be since it's a mummy bag.

My big concern with this bag is the fact that it is a mummy style bag and I really like to have some room to move around in my sleeping bags. I gave up mummy bags 20+ years ago in favor of rectangular bags. Adjusting to a mummy style bag may or may not work. I'm figuring that I'll be so tired after my hikes that I might sleep okay in a mummy bag. We'll see.

You're accumulating quite a collection of gear Bill. I added a North Face Cat's Meow 20 degree mummy bag last year and am quite pleased with it. It replaced an old Holubar -10 down bag which is still in great shape but just too warm for the hiking I do now.  Now if the temps are that cold I want to be close to a heater instead of in a tent.

hehe, now that's a sleep system, indeed.

I've found mummy bags serve quite well on backpacking trips.  My 20F Slumberjack bag has a zip open foot which helps with ventilation and allows you more room.  The zip open section is covered with a fine mesh to keep any crawlies out if I'm cowboy camping.  The upper section is plenty wide to twist and turn during a nights' sleep.

I am afraid that's not a good thing!  :icon_eek:

It might depend on whether they expect you to carry enough water for them to shower . . .

Did you notice they are sitting in the 'new & improved' Hot Springs? Tiling, new pool edge to sit on, clean water. These ladies like being in the backcountry!
